When is the ideal time to take my CFA?

As soon as possible. Though, getting excellent scores is also a priority. Don't take it too early and have mediocore scores. If you're going to SLS you'll take it then.

Between 0700-0730????

Seriously, when you have done some practice tests and feel you are ready to commit a decent score at this point in the appl process.

Input we give in our area: Shoot to max most, and get above average on the remaining items in the CFA. But we are a competitive area.

This far ahead there is no reason you should not be able train to do the above by the time you need to take the test. And realistically, other than the BBall throw, you'll want to be at least capable of CFA average or better anyway while at USMA.

This does not mean you can't get in with 1-2 below average scores, people do. But you do not want to count on that if you are a mainstream applicant with no "hook" (recruited athlete, URM, etc)

And this far ahead there is no reason to commit yet, and it's not like the SAT where any improved score is automatically factored in. You'll only get so many shots at the CFA for score.

do you think it would be alright to keep training over the summer and take it in August??

Yes. Like others have said, take it as soon as you are ready to do well. As long as it is done before Thanksgiving, you'll be fine.

So the one thing to think about is potential LOA's, which are normally in play around that time. Which means you'd want to be earlier than that, though it seems some go out without CFA's.

take it whenever you want but make sure you are ready. Practice doing all the events in order, they take a different toll on your body than you would expect, I found out the hard way. Good Luck!
