Majoring in Business Admin./Accounting - Air Force

If I am excelling in my major field - Business Administration - Accounting; what jobs would I be potentially looking at being placed in - once I graduate; if I am in Air Force ROTC at a Senior Military College?
 
People are probably not responding because you have yet to acknowledge what your career desires are in the AF.

Rated or non-rated?

What is your OML? In other words, cgpa, PF scores, FT ranking, AFOQT(TBAS), CoC rec.

You can get rated or non-rated as a Business major, but you will meet a board and that OML will be a factor regarding jobs. Higher the OML, the better the chance to get your AFSC.

3.0 cgpa, 94 PFT, bottom 50% FT, and the truth is the AFSC you are looking at it is whatever is left over. 3.6 cgpa, 98 PFT, top 20% of FT, and than you may get a choice of what you want to do regarding your AFSC.

You need to fill in the dots. CGPA? PFT? SFT ranking? CoC ranking? AFOQT/SAT/TBAS scores? Rated or non-rated?

Most career fields do not have a major requirement. Those are all open. Ones specifically requiring a major like yours are contracting, acquisitions, and finance.

Right now I'm at a 3.2 CGPA (and plan on doing better); and if I do good in regards to physical fitness and field training.......what if I keep around a 3.1-3.5 CGPA, when I graduate - would I get the crap end of the jobs?

One man's "crap" is another man's "fertilizer"; Like Pima said, we really should know what YOUR goals are before we can let you know if you can make it or not. But even then, three pieces of advise for you (take them for what they are worth).

1) Sure, you might not get your first pick on assignment night. Maybe not even your second. Throw yourself a pity-party THAT DAY, maybe even Day 2. But on Day 3, go in, do your job, do your job well, and do it with a passion to succeed. Mostly because people are counting on you to do just that, but also because if you do this, day in and day out, you will have a better chance of moving on to something you desire.

2)You may think the world hates you on assignment night because you didn't get choice #1 or #2. Lots of folks do. But a LOT of those folks go on to that "oh-so-not-wanted" career field and find they actually like it. Or even, heaven forbid, LOVE it. Or, they discover while they may not LOVE their specific job, they LOVE being an officer and a leader. I've seen both of these examples tons of times.

3) I guarantee, if you stay beyond 10 years, you will do SOMETHING other than your primary career field as an assignment. Even the flyers. The lucky ones get to do things they find cool even beyond their primary career fields. The smart ones realize that EVERY job is critical, and if you give it your all, you'll love them all.

4.0 Unweighted GPA in High School...military kid, dad a full-bull Colonel AT USAFA...I had the entire package...

Next year, I got in...2.20GPA for four years...AC PRO more times than you want to know...so...I got my NEXT TO LAST CHOICE for UPT Bases...

AND EXCELLED!!! Fighter Qualified (my lifelong dream!!!) :thumb: Got my fighter...bad weather moved into Mississippi...for weeks...flights were cancelled, classes delayed...graduation delayed...and 8 of us lost our fighters because we couldn't make all the training dates after UPT!!! :stretcher:

And in the '80s, that meant you got sent to some lousy job...and I got sent to a TANKER in North Dakota!!! The "Mighty" F-135 Stratobladder...

After the ENORMOUS pity party I threw for myself...it lasted 3 full days...I said to myself: "Self...be the BEST TOAD you can be!"
(TOAD: Totally Outstanding Airplane Driver)

Fast forward...after sitting SIOP alert for years (look that one up...:wink: ) and having been rated well above my peers...early upgrades all the way through instructor pilot...I was asked one day if I was interested in an exchange tour...

To the F-15!! :worship: :thumb:

And it was a BLAST!!! MY DREAM CAME TRUE!!!

And while in that role, I was yanked to the staff at an HQ, not "officially" transferred because I was "Blue 4", the newbie, senior captain, but the most inexperienced pilot...flying less than I really should have been because of my "rookie status." Still the Eagle but now a "staff puke!" :bang:

And that role (HQ Staff, Battle Staff, Command Post, etc...etc...) was fascinating!

And I realized THEN...right then...that there were NO bad jobs...I loved the KC...and the Eagle...and when I flew them the T-38...and I loved being Wing Exec, General's Exec...staff pogue...

Because I made the job, and the job made me!

Now I look back...was there EVER a job I didn't get the most out of?

YES!!!

UPT Snack Bar guy...I never did learn to make coffee!!!
(I grew up in the UK...I drink tea)

You aim high and when you receive your assignment, good/bad/indifferent, it is YOUR call whether it'll be a great job or not...

Attitude sets the pace!

Thank you for the helpful insight..VERY Helpful..... HOWEVER, if i choose not to do active duty or just want to do RESERVES; what would be my chance in picking a base...such as Scott Air Force Base or Whiteman AFB?

Also, I can't directly tell you what I'd like to do in the Air Force, cause all I've ever been to are bases and seen the lifestyles and how much more I love the Air Force way of life and their careers seem to be good and for your education. I know a TON about the Army, so I could tell you I probably would never want to be anything on the front lines doing all the grunt work - nothing like the Spec Op's Guys; I like computers, flying, space, managing (I'm a business man...thoroughly)..

AFROTC is not like AROTC. There is NO choosing, you WILL go AD for 4 yrs 24/7/365 days a yr.

RESERVES in the terms of the Army perspective does not exist for AFROTC. Reserves has more to do with the commissioning issue (ROTC), nothing more. You can't go ANG because you choose to not got AD as a newly minted O1. AF owns you as an AD member for 4 yrs.

If you want Scott or Whiteman, best bet is to go non-rated, and hope they have a position for an O1 opened when you commission. You are looking for what the AF calls homesteading, if the goal is to be in Illinois or Missouri to be near your family and serve at the same time, ROTC is probably not your best bet.

I would suggest looking into the ANG. You can serve and be at the base you want too.

Remember even if you are a business major and get Acct/Fin as your AFSC they can send you to Ramstein, Cannon, Eilson. You submit a dream sheet for bases, but most AD members will tell you that it was a dream when they got 1 of the 3 off their dream sheet.

Sorry, but I don't think you are being realistic to how AF works when it comes to commissioning as an AFROTC cadet.

Yeah this is some great helpful advice, never knew the air force rotc worked that way...shows how much I know about that. lol I just assumed the rotc programs worked sort of similar, army and air force speaking.
 
They don't.

They maybe sister services, but like any family sibling it can be a night and day difference.

AFROTC is like NROTC, 85% of their scholarship recipients are Tech Majors.

NROTC is like AROTC, scholarships are tied to the cadet/mid and the university.

AFROTC and NROTC can and will dis-enroll any cadet/mid if they are not selected for summer training/contracted as a rising jr., regardless of scholarship.

AFROTC and NROTC commissioned grad MUST go AD.

They have that same family tie, in the ROTC world it is called OML. Your jr/rising sr yr in college where you get a career assignment.

They all also have if you go X field, the training may require you to stay longer. I.E. rated. AF you owe 10 yrs after winging. It takes 1 yr to wing, and as a ROTC grad you may report 6-9 months after commissioning. In other words, 12 yrs on a good day before you leave AD... 34 yo!

I suggest that you investigate the paths and time commitments owed before you move forward.

You can go Army, be stationed near home as a Reservist, but ask yourself are you willing to spend a yr deployed in the sandbox if the unit is activated?

You can go AF, but ask yourself are you willing to be stationed at Osan, Korea for a yr or two?

The fact and the reality is you will be owned by either branch for yrs. They say jump, you say how high?

If this is not something that appeals to you, walk away now.
