Any recommendations? Supposedly there used to be a base shuttle but this may not exist. The only means I've tracked down so far is a $70 cab ride

Hello EDelahanty,
I hope you are well. Call (502) 380-8228, I spoke to the guy and he said Cadet Delahanty could get free transportation to Fort Knox. My son was down there three years ago.

Military Reception Area

The Military Reception Area is located in the hallway behind the west ticket counters in the landside terminal. Military personnel (from Ft. Knox) are available to assist all military and their dependents upon arrival to Louisville International. Call (502) 380-8228 if you have questions or for a listing of reception-area hours.

Thanks NorwichDad for the great information. I called as well and they said for DS to just show up and they would take care of everything from there.

I forgot to ask...do they need to be in ACUs? DS orders indicate that they MUST wear civilian clothing to travel in.

My son had orders for a different school, but I tend to think that a nice civilian button shirt, pants and shoes is really appropriate for ROTC kids traveling. Did your PMS tell you need a militiary ID? I don't think so on that but I am not sure. I can't remember and I don't want to call my son at IBOLC, sorry he is busy this week.

One other thing, now that my memory is coming back. My son was given gear including boots and ACUs from the ROTC department for most of his schools. He also had a packing list. Follow the packing list. Did you get the list and gear. Sorry my son did not do CULP.

Yes, he was planning on wearing travel business attire.

I was just hoping that they believed him at the airport counter and give him a ride to Ft. Knox.

He does have a military ID that was issued when he became contracted. Has his picture and name on it, so that will probably work :)

I am certain they will not give them any issues. My son has found that the people at the airports go out of their way for the soldiers and families. They know the ROTC kids are new to ther process.

They wear civilian clothes up to Fort Knox. The cadets will be given the information on who is picking them up right before they arrive. On my sons's arrival day, there were about 4 different van trips picking up cadets. Some senior military member always picked up the kids.

They are told to bring their dog tags. If they don't have them, they will be made at Ft. Knox. As far as military ID, if they have it they bring it or it gets issued at Ft. Knox. They will need both of these items and will get them all there if needed. Their driver's license and another form of ID will be needed.

Also they are required to bring the copy of their orders. They will show that at chow so they don't pay for their meals. We also showed it at the airport and they waived the baggage fees and the 50 lb weight limit as well. Our airport actually allowed my husband and I through security to wait with our son as he was traveling on orders.

The cadets will be given a packing list and that will vary depending on the CULP country. Two sets of ACUs along with tee shirts, socks, boots, and patches will be required it seems. A towel will be needed for their time at Ft. Knox but all bedding will be given there.

Great post and particular point - copies of orders. Make a few extra sets -more than you think you need.

I just have to restate how valuable this Forum is!
DS had himself very well organized for this CULP mission . He told us that he'll figure out the transportation from airport to FT Knox. He's in the air now on his way. I found this post from over 2 yrs ago. Just called the number and it's current. Im calmer now and relieved to confirm all is organized ( and could txt my son the info).

Good bump.

For cadet summer training, your DS/DD is most likely not going to be the only one traveling to Knox on the same day, especially if it's for CIET and CLC. All they have to do is get off the plane, get their bags, and go to the Knox reception area. There are signs everywhere and probably people waiting to meet the cadets (the transportation cell is *theoretically* supposed to be tracking days that cadets are coming in), if not frequent announcements over the airport PA system. Don't freak out and don't get a cab from Louisville to Knox, it will all work out.

And don't have expectations, you'll be disappointed. Have fun

I went last year... There will be Cadre (Soldiers) their waiting for you when you get off your flights. They will show you where to go, and what to do. There are signs everywhere, so it is pretty much dummy proof. Buses will take everyone to Fort Knox for all the fun, which is LDAC/CLC. Enjoy!!

Disregard my previous comment. I missed the part about it being for a question in reference to a CULP mission. What I mentioned was in reference to LDAC/CLC. Sorry.

I was wondering the same thing for my daughter as she just called with her flight info and that was a question we had - so thanks for all the info!

On another note (and maybe we just have to get used to Army/Gov't inefficiencies) but she is not happy that she even has to fly at all. We live in Indy just over 2 hours from Ft. Knox and were thinking we would drive her (and don't really care if they even reimburse her for mileage). But instead, we have to drive her 40 minutes to airport (of course over an hour before her flight - so there's her 2 hour drive to Ft. K), and then she flies from Indy to Atlanta, where she has a 41 minute layover and then and hour and half flight back north to Louisville and then the ride from the L'ville airport to Ft. Knox. Her return flight is not much better as she goes through Chicago.

How is this cost or time efficient??? She is a very organized person who likes efficiency so it just frustrates her. And we get some of the hurry up an wait and last minute changes, especially this year with CIET being new, but this seems ridiculous. And she told her ROTC staff multiple times in emails and verbally that she preferred to drive.

Yes! Answer is there. Welcome to the United States Government! There are tribes in the blazing hot deserts in Africa trying to figure out what to do with the Winter Gear just sent by the USA.

Best Wishes to your daughter.
