Superintendent

I have yet to hear anything. Doesn't surprise me though that it is taking this long.

Does anyone want job?

Thx for response----amazing---over 400 views---one response---no one knows anything---months have passed----suspect after the way past Supers have been treated no one wants to risk the rapidly revolving door or a "transfer" to an obscure post with no reason given.

Guess government can keep secrets when they want to after all. And I thought DC had more leaks than Reserve Fleet ships I sailed on.

Undobtedly we have no "need to know" and therefore do not have necessary security clearance.

Oh well.........we know MARAD is proabably doing "their" best. That their performance is at least predictably consistent if not stellar. One would think supporters of the Institution and interested parties would at least be extended the courtesy of regular updates on their progress---appears not.

What a sad state for such a once wonderful but now deeply troubled place. Sad, very sad. Heartbreaking.

gloom and dooomer response is not necessary.

We will find out when they hire someone. To play the gloom and doom card is counterproductive  ...and the "place" certainly isn't a "deeply troubled place. Sad, very sad..." BIG sigh, and GOOD GRIEF!

Mega dittos on that!

DS is graduating in 3 weeks. We are psyched for the booz cruise and the ball! DS has had 4 different Supes in 4 years but still survived. KP will survive.

The place is still beautiful and the mids despite all that is happening are doing well. They are rising to to any challenges and showing leadership from within. I am sorry the situation exists but I am proud of the mids and staff for the job they are doing.

See ya on the cruise in 2 1/2 weeks. Hard to believe the four years are almost over. I have to bring my Grand Caravan in order carry everything back to Michigan. I am ready for a celebration.

Super Ditto's on that to the other parents of members of the Class of 2012 - now they just need to get through License Exams - next week and then it'll be celebration time... sure sending big time positive waves and karma out towards KP.

Any movement at all in this area? Seems to be taking an excessively long period of time.

The fact that KP does not have a sup by now is most unfortunate. I can assure you, filling this opportunity does not take this much time. SES positions are typically filled quickly. There are plenty of qualified candidates available. The absences of leadership in any fine institution such as KP makes them vulnerable to cuts in the near term years and worse consequences in the longer term. We need strong leadership at the very top. The absence of leadership rolls down hill and in this case KP is suffering.

MARAD has no real urgency to replace the super since Dean Kumar is filling the shoes of both Dean and Supe - and they are probably paying him a reduced salary hence saving $$ for the government. I heard there were 3 applicants who were actually interviewed. Two left after first day and the third left in the middle of the second day. This is all second-hand info so I have no real proof this happened. Understand that they informed the 3rd person he had to report directly to MARAD and that was a deal breaker, along with the fact that they were insisting he live on campus and were going to charge in excess of 3K rent for the digs - while only paying $140k per year. This, also, is hearsay so take it for what it's worth. As I said previously, MARAD has no incentive to replace the supe.

I really have to wonder why are people so negative about everything - I note this post has a) nothing but negative undertones, b) clearly states repeatedly it is based totally on hearsay and secondhand at best information, c) clearly doesn't understand the cost of living in NY and that $3K to rent a house on Long Island, or even say the DC Metro area "close in" is more than fair, and that the salary for the position is set by it's GS level which is SES - 1 or 2 so the salary will be somewhere between 119, 554 and either 165, 300 or 179, 700 depending on wether MARAD has a "Certified Performance Appraisal System". For what it is worth, the salary of an 0-8 (two star Admiral) is generally ~$165K depending on his/her years of service.

That said whoever takes the job will likely be taking it not for the salary or perks but because it is an avocation for him or her just like it was for Vice Admiral Stewart and for Rear Admiral Greene. That's where things probably get hard for recruiting "the right-kind of person" IMO. Keep in mind it took a fairly long, I would say similarly long time before they got the last guy, who was definitely a "right guy" IMO - Greene after - they misfired with his immediate predecessor. However, given there are no easily supplied (at least by MARAD) answers as to why Phil Greene is no longer there; there is such a plethora of bad press about MARAD's lack of/totally ineffective leadership for the maritime industry; and all the hub-bub about their micromanagement of the USMMA, as one of the five major issues the industry has with the current administrator - you are probably right as to them having trouble attracting the type of people they really want for the job, and who might last more than a year.

Of course that's probably an oxymoron since it seems they want a leader and acknowledged great person; but they have to be willing to swallow their tongues. Yes, swallow their tongues and toe the line, even when, scratch that, especially when someone from MARAD Washington comes up to KP and under the guise of doing their oversight role of the Academy, "meets" directly with midshipmen to "discuss" issues with them in the quarters of a lower level member of the .... oh wait, we're not supposed to talk about things like that - belay my last. Of course why would anyone who is the right kind of person to take the Superintendent's job think protecting the student's and the institution's reputation from such behavior might be part of the job? Clearly it must not be so.

The only real question in my mind is how big should the banner trailing behind the airplane that flies over graduation on Monday be?

I vote for 187 feet on the banner!!!!!

I will be watching for it.

Someone knows their "plebe knowledge" ---- hey if the position is still open, I'd suggest this guy - he seems perfect for the job :

I especially like the Bronze Star part of the above, wouldn't it be great to have the USMMA led by one of our own who is a genuine hero in addition to an honorable guy. Sort of like the guy who will be the commencement speaker on Monday as well.

Well wouldn't it be one heck of a movie ending if either one of those guys was announced during the commencement? Nah, too corny and would never happen.
Also you mean to tell me you guys in the know ( way more than most of us) really do not know what the real story was behind the "reassignment"?

Whoa right there! I am NOT trying to dig up speculation even as entertaining as that would be. I just really thought the alumni probably knew the whole story. Again I am not asking for it here. A PM would be fine, lol

DS is off campus and arriving in Newport RI getting ready for the race to Bermuda. Finally the first year is over. Still waiting on a couple grades so not completely ready to exhale yet  ( yes my face is blue)

<snip some really good stuff>

Ah, my mind flashes back 31 years to that late 22 June morning. The soft sound of a small single engine aircraft in the not so far distance, the rumbling of voices in the Tomb Field grandstands. . . . and rising over the tree line to the north of the pitch a plane towing a banner slowly rises into view. . . . . .

It was as much fun as jumping into the pool just a bit later. . . . .
