Nomination Request Letter

I am going to be a senior in high school this year and will be applying for a nomination to West Point in the fall.

I have seen many people on the forum talking about nomination request letters, and I was wondering if writing a letter is really necessary. I have checked my MOC's websites and none of them say anything about writing a letter requesting a nomination, the websites just have the nomination application requirements and deadlines.

I have already begun working on my applications because they are online and I have designated for the congressional offices to receive my SAT and ACT scores. So is it really necessary for me to formally request a nomination from MOCs, and if so, when should I send the letter? Should I do it ASAP or wait until my candidate portal opens at the end of July?

Hi!

Yes, it is absolutely necessary for you to formally request a nomination from each of your MOC's.

Now, is it necessary that you actually print a letter, sign it, and mail it? That depends upon your MOC. Many of them now accept that information over their website. BUT...some do not.

If your MOC does NOT require a "letter" per se, but rather, will accept that request online, then you're good.

But I'd definitely make certain.

As for when to do it...that again depends upon your MOC. My US Representative (I sit on his nomination board) has a deadline of 1 October. However...I know his office has already received requests so...

I remember one of my MOCs websites asked for all my information online and gave basic requirements. After I put my information in I got a letter about a week or two later with a complete list of requirements that included a written statement/letter describing my interest in my academy of choice. Each MOC is different, but all three of my MOCs required a letter/written statement/essay of some sort.
