Way to go, 2012!

Kings Point graduates 219 members of Class of 2012

Academy (USMMA), Kings Point, N.Y., has graduated 219 members of its Class of 2012 at a commencement ceremony where Captain Mark Kelly, Class of '86 and a former NASA astronaut, gave the address before an audience of more than 2,000.

Captain Kelly is a retired U.S. Navy captain and naval aviator who flew combat missions in the Gulf War prior to joining the space program.

"However today's graduates choose to continue serving their country, I'm certain that Captain Kelly's remarkable life story will be an inspiration to them all," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. "I am extremely proud of these new leaders who will serve our nation with honor and a commitment to excellence."

This year's graduates represent 37 states and the four foreign countries of South Korea, Malaysia, Panama and Singapore. USMMA graduates have the option of joining the Naval Reserves and working in the seagoing merchant marine and transportation industry, or applying for active duty in any of the Armed Forces. Based on Academy estimates, 21 percent of the 2012 graduates will serve in active military duty and more than 67 percent will be employed on board commercial and Navy ships.

"There is currently a significant shortage of marine engineers in this country and also around the world," said Dr.Sashi Kumar, the academy's acting superintendent and academic dean. "With this graduating class, more than half are graduating as marine engineers. As a federal academy, we are constantly adjusting our curriculum to meet the changing needs of the maritime industry and provide the most qualified merchant marine officers to meet our country's needs in both war and peace."

According to my DS there were approximately 200 seniors at graduation and that included 40+ setbacks from 2011. The class stated with 320 in 2008, a loss of 50% of the class.

My understanding is the 33 - 40% washout remains basically typical going back to the era I graduated - the early 1980's. That would all seem to match what you are saying JMC0759 - remember there are some 2012 setbacks on track to graduate with the Class of 2013. The graduating Class of 2012 had 207+ 12 foreign students for a total of 219, and the number of setbacks in that number that I heard was 40 as well. It's not an easy road to travel to graduation, that's for sure. Additionally, it's notable that the USMMA Class of 2012 had one of the highest, if not the highest ever USCG License first time pass rates ever.

USMMA Midshipmen have a large course/credit hour load, basically crammed into the 3 years on campus, the sea year which for most is the best thing about USMMA but for a few is not to their liking at all, the regimental system and life - basically 24/7 while you are in residence, and the normal passage from teenager to young adult and athletics/extra-curriculars to provide you some semblance of normalcy. All in all that's why I always tell entering Plebes two things: a) always place academics first as once you fall behind it's really, really hard to make it up and "get off the razor's edge" and b) YOU have to want to do it for YOU not for anyone else and everyone has that moment usually during plebe year when you stare into the abyss and ask - what the "heck" am I doing this for ... I think, that's why once you go through Plebe year with your good friends in your class you really have a core support group that will last a lifetime and it includes more than just your immediate family.

:thumb:Once again congratulations Class of 2012, YOU did it. It may be presumptuous but I'm pretty sure I can say we (your families) are all very proud of you.:thumb:

Well stated. I know I asked myself those same questions a couple of weeks into Indoc. Congrats to 2012, fair seas, following winds and the like. Although we all know that those conditions never last long.

Class of 2012 started with 309 mids, with 15% women..my DD was one and made it through...I believe she said about 20 of her original classmates made it through the end with her..some were disenrolled, some left and some were setback..
