Prep School

What is the basis of being offered admission into the prep school, rather than a direct admission? Also do they offer admission to the prep school, and direct acceptance and you chose?

They will either offer you acceptance to prep school OR the academy. Not both. Offers to prep school (for high schoolers) are limited to those who are acedmically unqualified to attend the academy, yet the boards see something in the candidate they like. Therefore prep school is meant to qualify them academically for the academy.

willc, go to the Service Academy Preparatory School thread and look @ history. You'll find lots of background on NAPS.

The big thing to keep in mind should a candidate/prospect receive an offer to NAPS or NAF prep program: the offer is generated by Admissions! It is not something that one applies for, it is a decision of the board. Sometimes the board consideration is initiated by a recommendation by the BGO in the candidate interview report, but as often as not it develops via the board's review of the candidate packet. Essentially it is indicative of the board's interest in the recipient, and determining that there is interest in having the candidate as a midshipman once some problems are cured, so to speak. There is a very high percentage of such preppers becoming midshipmen in the next subsequent class; as often as not if the candidate does not become a midshipman it is the result of the candidate's decision NOT to proceed or failure to meet the requirements to become a midshipman. In my view, it is a very good deal for the candidate who is not quite ready for NAVY, and the preppers have compiled an excellent record of performance as midshipmen. I have had several candidates travel this route to NAVY.
