3 year scholoarship

I've looked on the AFROTC site and didn't see how to apply for the 3 year scholarship. Any advice?

It is my understanding that there is no application for a 3 year scholarship for hs seniors. College freshmen can be nominated to receive a 3 year IS scholarship. You can't apply for a 3 year just as you can't apply for a type-1 or type-2 specifically. You get put into a national competition and do your best. If your best is enough then you receive a scholarship type that is decided for you. You can upgrade a type-7 or type-2 to the type above it in order to change the 4 year to a 3 year, but I think that's it.

I agree there is no 3 yr HSSP, the ISSP is exclusively for college students, if you are already in college you need to hit the ISSP link, not the HSSP link.

There are students that also get as Non Ducor stated scholarships from their own det, these are just for the college you are currently attending and it comes out of their budget. That is where you must be offered the scholarship, you don't apply.

Two different programs.

my son applied to USMA, USNA and for NROTC for class of 2016. notified in feb, i believe that he would not be accepted at USMA, made it to final week for USNA before notification of no-acceptance. never heard anything from NROTC. in early april, recieved a letter from AROTC, that he had been awarded a 3 year scholarship, which he accepted to Ohio State. this is a scholarship he had not applied for. we were told that West Point sent Cadet Command a list of qualified applicants that had not been accepted , and they offered a limited number of scholarships from that list

Small world, I applied to USMA class of 2016 and recieved the same offer. I am very excited and also hope your son has a great time.

To the original author of this thread, when you apply for an ROTC schorlarship, no matter what branch it follows the same pattern.

Once your packet is sent to a review board, they start out with awarding 4-year scholarships, if you dont initially make that cut, i believe you're out. As the process goes on eventually they can not offer any more 4 year scholarships, and then procede to 3 year scholarships. From my understanding, people who apply for an ROTC scholarship and were awarded a 4-year did it early and people with 3 years tended to wait until the middle/end of their second semester in HS.

I ended up doing the ladder and sent my packet in "late" and was awarded a 3 year scholarship, but I had already accepted the one USMA offered becuase it was to any school i had gotten into. To support my theory, when I went back to thank the PMS (professor of military science) that conducted my interview for the National ROTC scholarship, he explain that, given my credentials, if i turned my packet in sooner, i may have gotten a 4 year.

Hope this helps.

Oh no doubt AROTC offers 3 year scholarships, but the poster asked about AFROTC and I don't believe they work that way since they are not tied to the school. Hs seniors are only awarded 4 years if they are awarded one at all. If the recipient wants to upgrade their scholarship, it will be changed to a 3 year, though some upgrades have stipulations. On the statement of intent you have to sign to accept the scholarship there are 4 choices to select from. A) 4 yr type-7 B) 4 yr type-2 C) 4 yr type-1 D) 3 yr type-2. The only other 3 year option is for an IS college scholarship. If the 3 yr is more important than branch choice or if he/she is also interested in the Army the poster should definitely apply for AROTC also.

I agree with Non-Ducor AFROTC does not work the same as AROTC in that way. They do not work that way, mainly because as Non stated the scholarship is tied only to the cadet and can take it anywhere in the nation that accepts the scholarship. AFROTC is the only branch that offers this to the cadet/mids.

I have heard of AFROTC candidates getting a 4 yr. through the college det. itself, but that should not be confused with the national board. Two different things. Typically the big difference is these cadets would not be contracted since it is a college det scholarship until they become a POC. May equal to no Stipend or book allowance. All cadets on scholarship via AFROTC HQ must be contracted to activate the scholarship.

One other thing to realize is AFROTC DOES NOT TALK to AFA. Not at all. The AFA doesn't send a list to AFROTC, AFROTC doesn't send a list to the AFA. The last board is held about the same time as the AFA is doing its Mass mailing. By the time all of the appointments go out, AFROTC would have already offered all of their scholarships. See above re:college det. regarding caveat.
