I've been lurking around these forums for about a year now. I'm heading into my senior year and am chest-deep in the ROTC and Academy application procedures... I'd like to start off and say that these forums are fantastic resources for aspiring Midshipmen/Cadets.

I recently attended Keystone Boy's State, June 24th-30th. I was truly humbled by the level of involvement and success that some of these kids had.

I was able to win the nomination of my party to run for governor and ended up winning governor in the primary election. I know that Boy's State is a major resume booster, but how about being elected Governor? I know that on each Activity Record for each Academy's application there is a checkbox for 'Governor' or 'Lt. Governor'.

My SAT's are 740CR, 660M, and 700W. GPA is 3.255U/W and I am ranked top 40% in a very competitive high school. I am a legacy; my father attended the Academy, '85, and my mother us a AFROTC product from Duke University.

I'm not giving a full list of my qualifications as that wasn't my original question. Any help would be much appreciated! Again, how much will Boy's State Governor help me?

As my father would say "it's an added feather in your cap." My interviewers for USNA and ROTC last year were very impressed that I had gone to and completed Boy's State - and I wasn't the governor - so I think it will definitely help you. The whole Boy's State Program is a leadership experience, and leadership makes up about 30% of your admissions battle. That being said, being governor won't make up for weak academics or failing the CFA, but I think it definitely helps show USNA you have leadership ability, and it also will help a lot with the MOC interview process.

Thanks for the quick reply.

It just so happens that Congressman Todd Platt's, PA District 19, was a speaker at our session of Boy's State and also happens to be my MOC who I am applying to for nomination. Will definetly help.

Thanks again.

Candid Response

Beef up the math scores,it's all about super score value for LOA's. Push the class rank and don't rely on legacy factors. I was told to not show up for Navy summer seminar vs. Boys State and that showed me what they valued.

Is my math SAT score horrid, or good?

Your math score is not horrid. It's OK. It might even be good enough. But you'll be competing against folks with higher math scores, so I recommend trying to improve it. In addition to pursuing a MOC nomination, pursue a Presidential bin. You are most likely eligible. More noms is better.

What about my reading? Is a 1400 competitive?

My application will be entirely complete, and I am sending my request for Presidential nom in tomorrow. Seeking an MOC nom as well.
