I had an interesting conversation with my son last night. He is at IBLOC and they were in the field all week. I have been thinking about some of the posts here about contracting and fully understanding the financial aspects of contracting and committment to ROTC. Some of my favorite people here have been commenting about truly understanding that committment and your responsibilities. My son said that the training this week with all they did provided a real "gut check" for all the 2nd Lts. They were pushed to their limits and really challenged. The cadre are absolute professionals and all safety was always taken into consideration. My point is that you must understand that this committment to service will get harder and harder especially after you commission. Your responsibilities will continue to grow. There will be deployments and even much harder challenges to overcome. You will be expected to deal with them. You must be prepared. What they experienced this week is nothing compared to what they may in the future. My son is doing real well but said this was an eye opening week for all of them.

Understand that scholarship or contract means you must really commit to this personal excellance for a period much longer than your years of college. There may be far greater challenges during your service. You must be ready to overcome all of the gut checks. Understand this.

Your post reminded me of the last statement the USMC Commandant said to the newly commissioned officer after he swore them it. "Your hard work and comittment is just beginning"

It really is true, responsibility to your soldiers and their families. It is a truly honorable pursuit.

Not sure on his thoughts for this past week as I have not spoken with him this weekend yet. I do know that they are working them really hard. He had some pictures where they just came in from the field and everyone collapsed on the spot they were standing and immediately fell asleep. DD just got home from LDAC last night and she was pretty gassed as well.
