Incoming swabs hail form 39 states, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Belgium and South Korea.

I'm sure more detailed information will be available to the public very soon.

Unofficially now is that we're down to somewhere around 227 or 226 due to Medical DQ and CRRs.

Wow, a 10% attrition already, is that higher then previous years?

No, that is fairly typical. My son's class had 307 to start and lost almost 30 over swab summer. If they're still there at this point they'll likely remain for the start of the year. It's the first couple weeks that weed out a lot of them.

Remember you're starting with a much lower number so it's not fair to compare this class with previous ones.

Just checked the official Numbers. We're at 231, however we're expected to lose a few more who are fighting for waivers right now. Looking at the way it's been the past few weeks for waivers, I'm guessing they probably won't get them.

In the past, admissions statistics indicate that academics is the #1 reason for disenrollment, voluntary or involuntarily. Getting though swab summer is just the beginning of the hard part, not the end.

2012 graduated in May with a 20% attrition rate (294/233 I believe) compared to R-Day, the majority leaving well after swab summer. Even a few disenrollments in the last month of school this year.

Academics, conduct, honor, medical, PFE - I believe those are the top reasons (in order) that cause a disenrollment.

Waivers after start of year

Does the post regarding waiting for waivers after actually starting at the academy mean that acceptances are granted, applicants show up while waiting for a waiver, start the program and then may be denied the waiver and sent home? I thought you could not attend without first getting a waiver. Can someone clarify. Thanks!

Issues can come up that were either not detected during the DoDMERB. Also, one could become injured or exposed to levels of stress that cause a medical dis enrollment that could not be detected through any test bar the actual experience. Mine was preexisting. Stuff happens

@TT I thought I read you were disenrolled due to color blindness. Sorry for the confusion but that doesn't just happen. We're you unaware? Did you pass DODMERB?

It was mentioned that several cadets dropped out in even in the last month. Do you mean the last month of their 1/c year? I thought you had to stay in the Coast Guard after a certain time period had passed. What is the time period for dropout and do they have to pay anything back, in time and money?

Wishing all the new swabs a happy end of summer. : )

The difference here is that several cadets did not drop out in the last month of their first class year, but rather several cadets were dropped in the last month of their first class year. In other words they were kicked out of the Academy not by their own choice.

Officially the policy is that after the first day of your 2/c year you will be required to pay back the CG in enlisted service time for the amount of time you spent at the Academy. However due to the recent budgetary constraints and downsizing throughout the entirety of the CG, this hasn't been happening. In essence, they are allowing the cadets to walk if they want to leave, because we as a service are overpopulated and reducing the number of cadets helps to reduce the personnel population problem. (Say that three times fast! :yllol: )

They were disenrolled for not meeting the standard(s) required for graduation/commissioning, either academic, conduct, honor, or physical fitness standards. They did not "drop out" voluntarily.

Yes, it can even happen in the last month of your 1/c year.

I can't recall any news of a cadet in the last 5 years being ordered to serve as an enlisted person after being disenrolled from the CGA.

(c)
(1) The Secretary may transfer to the Coast Guard Reserve, and may order to active duty for such period of time as the Secretary prescribes (but not to exceed four years), a cadet who breaches an agreement under subsection (b). The period of time for which a cadet is ordered to active duty under this paragraph may be determined without regard to section 651 (a) of title 10.

(2) A cadet who is transferred to the Coast Guard Reserve under paragraph (1) shall be transferred in an appropriate enlisted grade or rating, as determined by the Secretary.

(3) For the purposes of paragraph (1), a cadet shall be considered to have breached an agreement under subsection (b) if the cadet is separated from the Coast Guard Academy under circumstances which the Secretary determines constitute a breach by the cadet of the cadet’s agreement to complete the course of instruction at the Coast Guard Academy and accept an appointment as a commissioned officer upon graduation from the Coast Guard Academy.

Key word = may. Not "will" or "must."

In my son's class of 2009 a girl was dismissed TWO DAYS BEFORE GRADUATION due to an honor violation relating to a final exam.

Never said they don't get disenrolled after swab summer. But you have to put the numbers in perspective...smaller classes can't be compared on a raw numbers basis with a bigger one. My son's class had about a 25% attrition from start to finish.

OK, so one more question. If a cadet is disenrolled during their 1/c or 2/c year and they do not go enlisted, is that cadet required to pay back any amount to the Coast Guard or are they allowed to walk away debt free.

Granted, being kicked out of the USCGA does not look good on a resume, but still....

You would think they would have to repay it, but........

It's up to the DHS Secretary, and it's not always required.

In fact, it may now be the norm. I know of 3 who were disenrolled after their 2/c year, (2 of them after Billet Night in March) and the Govt required no recoupment whatsoever.

That is a surprise to say the least. ROTC Scholarship Contracts given to cadets of the other services spell out in the contracts that they Will Be required to either fulfill an obligation as enlisted or re-pay the cost of the scholarship in the event of dismissal. These scholarships are almost always at universities that cost far less then the amount the CG claims the Academy is worth.

With all the budget issues within the CG it seems like they would be leaving a lot of money on the table when they dismiss a cadet.

Although i'm sure this would almost never happen, a 1/c cadet could decide their last semester they no longer wanted to serve in the CG, fail a couple PT Tests and be on their way with no obligation and 3.5 years of free education. Granted they will have that cloud of being dismissed hanging over their head but they will eventually overcome that.....and with no debt.
