Hi I just received a 3-year Reserve Army ROTC scholarship today. I am happy that I was able to receive a scholarship but I was really hoping that I would get an Active Duty scholarship. I spoke to my recruiter and he said that no matter how well I do in LDAC and I am able to qualify for Active Duty, I will still be locked in for Reserve. I have no problem with going into the Reserves but I really want to go Active Duty. Is there any chance that that could happen?

So you signed a GFRD? Why would you sign a GFRD if you really wanted active? A few years ago it was easier to switch but now it is very difficult to transfer over. A buddy of mine has been trying to do it for months and has met nothing but frustration with active boards. If you really want active you could drop the scholarship and try to compete for an active one again or just grind through college career and hope to switch over. Just saying the odds are not great in this day and age, as I said above if this was 2007 it would be a different story.

Your chances of switching to Active Duty are incredibly small. The Reserves would probably need to be at 110% strength before they would permit you to switch. Some states have allowed NG 2LTs to switch to Active Duty because they were at 110% strength. You should accept your fate and move on.

Serving in the USAR does not mean that you will never serve on Active Duty. Your unit could deploy. You can volunteer for IMA missions, short tours, etc.

I am a little unclear about your post. You state that you received a Reserve Army ROTC Scholarship, is the scholarship a GRFD. Who gave you the scholarship? Are you currently a ROTC Cadet at a battalion, meaning did you finish your freshman year and are going to start your sophomore year this fall. What recruiter have you talked to, is it the ROTC recruiter at the battalion or a local recruiter that you just happened to talk with.

Your post is a little vague. ROTC stands for Reserve Officer Training, All ROTC cadets can compete for Active Duty unless you accept the GRFD.

Just trying to understand which scholarship you were given.

Sorry to be slow on the draw, but what is GRFD?

GRFD Scholarships
GRFD (Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty) Scholarships: GRFD Dedicated ARNG (Army National Guard) Scholarship, GRFD Dedicated USAR (US Army Reserves) Scholarship, and GRFD Scholarships where the cadet can assess into either the NG or USAR.

I was given this scholarship by SCU Bronco Battalion. I don't know if it is GRFD because I have little knowledge about that matter. I am an incoming freshmen this upcoming fall. The gold bar recruiter at the battalion told me that I will be with the reserves after I commission.

Did you sign a Contract already? If so, do you have a copy of it?

It is important for anyone 18 or older to understand everything they sign, I mean every word of it, and what every word means. Read everything in the Contract, and if you don't understand something, ask. Don't feel rushed. Don't sign something you haven't completely read.

So you don't know what you signed? As an 18 y/o you will need to learn fast that what you sign is a legal and very real document that can be used for and against you. Signing a contract that forces you into a reserves commission without you really understanding is a big error on your part as well as the LT who was supposed to guide you through the process.

Better check with your batt STAT to see what you just signed up to do for 8 years...

If you haven't signed anything then just disregard everything I said.
