Hey all,

I was just wondering as to what my chances are of still getting active duty, as I have always wanted to be an active duty QM officer. I receicved an overall N at LDAC this summer for having one overall N in a leadership dimension. (also had one overall E and the rest all S's) I have a 3.64 GPA, 300+ on all APFTs including at LDAC, as well as 6/7 LDAC day nav and 4/5 night. I also got all S's on all my tactical evals out at camp as well. Any info on how the whole active duty cutoff works would be of great help!!

I think you still have a shot especially with QM. Just curious, what did you get your N in if you don't mind me asking? Google "fy 2011 oml" slides to see see the past year cutoff. I saw Purdue had some data and I might have an excel AD chance calculator in my email somewhere...

My N was in Military Bearing. I'm a naturally quiet person and my peer evals didnt go so well. Also, my TAC (airborne, ranger, SF, pathfinder qualified) docked my heavily for not appearing confident in front of others. I noticed on the Purdue OML ppt that your overall LDAC TAC evaluation is worth aroud 11.40% of te total score, so I'm just hoping my high marks in the other categories will be high enough to get me active duty. Any chance you can post that calculator?

I don't think branch has anything to do with it. Nurse corps is different and branched separately.

My understanding is that the OML is racked and stacked and the cutoff for AD/Reserves is made prior to branching. They may have your top three choices but I am not aware this has any bearing.

sidewinder- you need to contact and counsel with your PMS. He/she can tell you the best what your chances are.
Were you given an opportunity to redo LDAC?

Will certainly be curious as to what my pms has to say when we msIVs counsel with him in a few weeks. I graduated LDAC with camp credit- its just the overall N score i hope isnt a dreamkiller

You should still be able to get Active Duty. 2 Cadets from my BN had overall Ns at LDAC but still managed to get Active Duty. You will probably have to ADSO. You will get a better idea of where you will place on the National OML when your PMS does your Accessions Counseling and runs the Branch Expectation Tool to determine %s based on previous years' data.

It is but I was referring to the fact that he has a good shot of getting AD AND receiving QM as his branched unless he gets in the deadzone. It is on the lower part of the in demand branches.

Yes sir, that is the tool that I have it compiles 2009-2011 figures I believe.

I agree that at this point, your cadre will know more about your future than anyone here on this board.

The big missing bit of information here is your other campus scoring - your rank within your unit, your ECs, athletics, etc. While these are not a large number of points, it may be the difference (given that you may not rank high in your unit) in whether you will make the AD cut.

I'm surprised that your cadre hasn't talked to you about your "quiet nature" possibly being a problem. Perhaps you have been bypassed on leadership opportunities within your unit because of this? Perhaps I'm missing something here, but a person can be quiet and exude confidence. You may have had time to become comfortable and confident with the cadets you know, so this problem is only revealed when presented with unfamiliar people and/or circumstances. Still, this is something that should have been worked through before this time.

Regardless of the outcome of your OML score, you should spend your MS4 year working on leadership opportunities with people and situations you are not comfortable, working through the issues of being perceived as lacking confidence. You will need this in your military career as you will regularly be put in these situations regardless of your branching. You will be evaluated on your confidence. Hence the seemingly disproportionate weighting on your LDAC evaluation.

Take it as a wake-up call that you need to work on your presentation in unfamiliar situations with unfamiliar people. This is a good thing that you know this now.

Agreed. Shore up any obvious weakness. I don't mean every weakness, but this particular weakness is hurting you. For example, I have a friend who wasn't the best at public speaking. He was uncomfortable with it, and hadn't had many opportunities to improve in this skill. He joined Toastmasters. A year later, he is very good at public speaking. Incidentally, one of the good things that happens at the Academies is the identification of weakness, and putting a plan in place to strengthen it. Every cadet and mid is almost literally poked at, pulled at, pressurized, analyzed, to identify strengths and weaknesses, and the point of breakdown. This isn't cruel or meaningless aggression in the way junior high school kids rip at each other to form a heirarchy ... this is to create (emotionally) battle tested leaders. See if your PMS or other cadre at your school can work with you in this weakness that has been identified.
