Hows it going forums. Just wanted to see if any prior-enlisted or anybody else could help me out. I am trying to turn in a package for the Prep School for the Academy. I was wondering how much does high school GPA affect your package. If you get a good enough ACT score, good LoR, and volunteering, will it offset your high school GPA? Thank you all for your time.

What is your GPA, SAT/ACT and extra Curiculars etc?

My GPA is 2.5 from high school. I volunteer almost every weekend. I haven't gotten my ACT scores back. And for LoR, I can possibly get a 1 star and 4 star LoR.

Did you take Honors/AP classes to get that GPA? I guess the purpose of the USAFA Prep School is to prepare cadets who had low grades. And maybe they will accept you and when you improve there you might get to the academy.

Good luck!

LEAD information

Hi NimikUSAF,

I included the LEAD packet link and copied some additional information that speaks to your questions below. My son is a prior that is at the Prep school through the LEAD program this year. Getting in for the 2012-2013 school year was very competitive. No priors were given direct entry and the priors that I know of met and exceeded the guidelines for direct entry listed below.

5. How critical are test scores and high school GPAs?Very critical! Sixty percent of an applicant’s eligibility is based on their academic accomplishments. The LEAD program takes into account the maturity and experience that an airman brings to the Academy and Preparatory School, but a student can not survive at the Academy without the basic academic knowledge and skills required for success. Airmen are encouraged to contact their local education offices to sign up for ACT or SAT testing as soon as possible.

Guidelines for Preparatory School Appt: SAT Verbal 480 and SAT Math 500. ACT English 20, Reading 20, Math 20, and Science Reasoning 20. Top 40% of high school class or about a 2.70 GPA if school does not rank. Candidates should have taken a college preparatory curriculum in high school which included mathematics through algebra II. Pre-calculus and a high school chemistry course are strongly encouraged.

Guidelines for Direct Appt: SAT Verbal 580 and SAT Math 560. ACT English 24, Reading 24, Math 25, and Science Reasoning 25. Top 20% of high school class or about a 3.50 GPA if school does not rank. Candidates should have taken a college preparatory curriculum in high school which included mathematics through pre-calculus and should have also taken a high school chemistry course.

Best of luck with your admissions application.
