No Ranger Challenge?

Things are changing a little. Our RC teams are not going to the standard RC event usually held by 5th BDE and will instead attend Sandhurst at Ft Sill. Modeled after the USMA Sandhurst competition. Not sure if things are different everywhere or what.

Undestanding you may not know, but from your third hand knowledge EDelahanty, was there a particular reason? Bull any theories?

Son heard some news regarding RC for the 8th Bde. The 8th Bde holds regional competitions, this year there will be more schools at each regional, meaning fewer regional competitions. Since there will be more schools at each competition, Battalions will only be allowed to bring one team, the B Team will no longer be able to make the trip and compete.

Seems like each Brigade is handling things differently.

EDelahanty,
Let us know how it works out with your son's school.

I'm not sure on any theory. There may still be a 5th BDE RC competition, but it looks like everyone is going to Sandhurst instead. I'll try and dig up some info.

You're right about variations among brigades. Instead of RC each team in the 9th brigade must present a skit on an epic historical battle, create a float with a military fashion theme and do a cover of Call Me Maybe. At least one member of the team must be a freshman.

Just kidding. I'll get back to you on this next week.

Ranger Challenge tryouts started this past week and yes unfortunately there is only going to be one team at my college. Although the "A" team will be slightly bigger to have several backups that train just in case something happens.

Any updates from other cadets in other schools?

It's still on, don't know who told you that, I got cut a few weeks ago and our teams are still training. Our school only has 2 teams instead of 3 so it was real competitive this year.

My son's school is in the 7th Bde. According to him, nothing seems to have changed since last year. But then, his school only fielded one team to begin with. If I hear any other details I'll update.

I do know that team tryouts are proceeding nicely. They had 21 cadets come out initially, although 5 or so have already dropped. He seems excited about some of the new cadets' potential.

or so I just heard (third hand).

If true, this would be unfortunate.

The rumor was false, I am happy to say. It appears to have arisen from speculation about budget cuts. The competition will occur in January rather than October. This will allow more time for preparation than was available under the compressed schedule, though the climate may be less favorable.

From what I've seen, cadets who are willing to devote the additional time and effort required for this multi-faceted activity are likely to reap many benefits from it.
