What are parents' reactions to the latest letters from the Academy regarding mandated health insurance?

There seems to be no coverage for any sports teams injuries, including traveling to any team event, in the plan being offered by the Academy.

I believe there will still be coverage through the Academy for any sports team injuries which would be separate from the Academy plan or parents plans. I would like confirmation of this as well as I have a DS and DD on the track and cross country teams.

parents are pretty pissed and very confused.

Figured out we don't qualify for the waiver, even though DS is still on our insurance. Guess we're out $1100. It's not a bad price for a policy, especially one in New York, but still....

I suggest parent contact the Academy sponsored insurance plan

Kdbax, that is $1100 for the policy to run through June 30, 2013. We are looking more at like $1400 for a full year!

Mine graduates 17 June 2013. He still has our policy, but Good Lord willing he'll have his own coverage a year from now.

Break...

There must be something that we don't know? Would the parent have to buy an additional policy for thier son/daughter to play an intersholastic sport?

The NCAA itself requires and offers plans to colleges for their participating athletes. That is my guess on the exclusion. However although that is explainable I don't understand how and why this brought to light with a 30 day deadline. We are almost two months into the new year, including Indoc. Who dropped the ball here? Who didn't know KP needed to make a huge change that would effect parents so? We have a family plan. However we do not have in network providers within 25 miles of the academy. We live 700 miles away. So my DS who participates in a sport should have coverage for sports related injuries. He is ready to go to sea on A split. They are still covered by the companies who bring them onboard right? Granted there could be a sticky situation on that for various reasons but let me continue. Our family plan does have emergency benifits anywhere. So why on earth do I need to spend 1400 a year on another plan? Did the academy suddenly get Cancled from whatever plan they previously had? Would this have anything to do with the amount of incidents in 2012? I know I am fanning some conspiracy or wrong doing but it just doesn't make sense if there was going to be a change it wasn't discussed before the new class reported even if the details had not been hammered out. At our state university this is required of students on scholorship or fellowship students however the university itself picks up the premiums. Doesn't the NY times article mention an influx of money for the academy upgrades. What's next, a school lunch program? We need to purchase the uniforms? Oh, we already do that don't we. I know, coin operated air conditioners. Sorry, I am a little pissy about this.

Confused

We haven't received anything more than the initial letter, which I cannnot seem to locate at this moment.

Our mid is covered under our family health insurance policy. Regardless of having that, are we required to purchase something else?

Thanks for clarification.

Maybe, maybe not. There is a checklist you will need to answer to see if your insurance is equal or better than what they are now offering through United Health Care. If what you have is adequate you will apply for a waiver. At first look, what we have as a family plan was not adequate however after going through the checklist item for item with our insurance representative :thumb: I think we will pass afterall. All that ranting for nothing.
There is an Acadmy contact listed through the Parents Associations. I am sorry I do not have it available to give to you.

Mids received an email on either 8/27 or 8/29 that had more detail. The email stated that a letter would be mailed to the home address. I would contact your mid and have them forward the email to you. Items must be completed by 10/1/12. Contact info was posted on page 1. (on iPhone and fingers are fat today or I'd give you the post #.)

The letter (which we have not received in the mail but was e-mailed to us by the parents' association) will contain a list of required policy provisions if you want a waiver of the insurance requirement. If your health insurance policy does not contain all of the provisions, you will need to purchase the Academy policy. Our health insurance does not meet the requirements, as there are no participating providers within 25 miles of KP.

Welcome to Obamacare!

The costs of ALL insurance in the USA will go up for all of us in 2013, whether it be in the form of increased employee contributions, higher deductibles, etc.

At the same time, the % of out of network coverage, availability of coverage, and likely quality of care, will go down.

This plan reflects all of that.

I don't see where this has anything to do with Obamacare. It is a completely separate issue-
An issue involving a policy that MAY require parents to purchase inferior coverage for their mids while maintaining superior coverage on their own plans because of 1 or 2 questions about their own health insurance that require it to be far superior to the policy they offer.

Our policies must cover provide international coverage while theirs does not, our coverage must meet NY requirements for health insurance coverage whether they provide services in NY. Most shocking is that their policy does NOT provide coverage for sports related injuries while participating in sports at the school requiring the coverage (or face disenrollment) AND does not cover any injuries or accidents involving intoxication OR prexistings.

We are not too sure we can be required to purchase inferior insurance in addition to our family policies simply because we cannot answer "yes" to every question on their "drop down" form!

someone help me.

Does the USMMA cover its Student Athletes when they are playing College Football?

Yes, but not through the health insurance but through Workers Compensation. Don't ask why, but that's what we have been told. Athletics is viewed as being on "Academy Business".
