Everybody here seems pretty well-informed, but for any cadets who are itching to know if they qualified to go active duty and aren't sure where they will be placed -

Your cadre can look up your total OMS score under "Subsystem" in the CCIMS system. Apparently not every school knows about this, as many cadets are totally in the dark about their OMS points until the OML gets released.

Just some rough numbers for those concerned with getting active duty:

Mission set 2011 - OMS score cutoff for active duty was roughly 71.5
Mission set 2012 - OMS score cutoff for active duty was roughly 72

I'm no math whiz, but I'd expect cutoff score to stay either roughly the same or perhaps go up slightly with the # of lieutenant slots staying comparable to last year's numbers.

So, if your points are in the mid to high 70s, you probably have no worries going AD. If they are below, you most likely will not get AD. In any case, the OML comes out at the end of September, but it's nice having some predictability of where you stand compared to averages of recent cohorts.

thanks for posting.

The previous ADSO Briefing slides for 2010 and 2011 are no longer located at the web addresses I had bookmarked, so they are not available for me to review anymore.

However, I printed out one slide, and the column for AD shows this for 2011:

AD OML (2,817)
OMS
Highest 101.5
Average 82.38
Median 81.63
Lowest 50.76
Ave GPA 3.257
AD Selection Line: 71.58

Now, I'm a litte confused about the "Lowest: 50.76". I'm wondering if that was a typo on the original slide deck, since it is also clear that the AD Selection line was at 71.58 for 2011.

Your thoughts?

Dunninla - wouldn't that represent the lowest OML score of all cadets, with 101.5 being the highest?

no, the lowest OML is under the RC (Reserve Component) Column, and it was 46.03. I vote for the 50.76 being a typo.

PS whenever you find a really good Powerpoint on the Internet... be that at Cadet Command, or an ROTC Battalion that has posted it for its cadets, download and save it. I've noticed lots of good stuff disappears after about a year. I used to several NROTC Memos from 2010 and 2011 from the NETC website about scholarship quotas broken out by type of scholarship, etc. that all have broken URL links now, and I never saved them.

The 46.03 score was probably a cadet that had requested Reserves so they would not have been included on the lOMS list of those cadets that had requested Active Duty. The 50.76 score could be the lowest score on the Active Duty OMS. I would imagine, since the cut off was 71.58, that would be the lowest score that made Active Duty.

Remember that CC does not just pick an OMS number and every cadet above that number gets Active Duty. The Army determines the number of officers they require for Active Duty that year, the OMS number of the last cadet on that list becomes the cutoff. The number can change every year based on the scores.

Last year they took 3110 +- to Active Duty, lets say they take that same number this year, but this year the average OMS score for all cadets is much higher. The OMS cutoff could end up being 81.58, it doesn't mean they are taking fewer Active Duty, it just means that the average scores were higher.

If your in that 71.0 to 80.0 range there is no way to know what your chances are unless you know what the scores are for every cadet above you. The same could work in reverse, the overall scores could be lower meaning the cutoff could end up in the 60.0's and they would still be taking the same number of cadets to Active Duty.

It's a lot more about your placement on the OMS then it is about what your number is.

Last year my son had roughly a 93.4 OMS, that put him at the 10.2%, two years earlier, he would have been in the 5%

Aren't there certain classifications of cadets who get AD automatically (nursing or SMC comes to mind here) regardless of the AD cutoff number?

Nursing Cadets are on a seperate list. SMC Cadets are included in the Active Duty list but are a small percentage, roughly about 6% of the Active Duty List.

Wasn't too sure of either. Thanks.

I was thinking that 50.76 could have been an SMC cadet who gets AD despite the general ROTC cutoff of 71.58 to answer dunninla's question...

Not trying to flame SMC cadets, but they are not subject to the same rules as other ROTC cadets with regards to AD selection. So the SMC cadet with the lower than cutoff score gets AD whereas the general ROTC student does not.

Good point, I hadn't thought of that.

Either this year or next nursing is no longer guaranteed AD and a separate OML for nurses will be derived to find that cut off for reserves.

Roughly 150-200 (maybe less) are taken out of the AD OML every year which does shift the percentages a bit. I have seen quite a few nurse DMGs which obviously leaves that 20% open to more line guys when the numbers are adjusted.

Aglahad DD is a 3rd year AROTC nursing cadet. Last spring she met with their Brigade nurse counselor and was told that the army was trying to get down to around 150 contracted nurse cadets for her year group 2014. They were allowing anyone who wanted to change majors the ability to change without a penalty in scholarship money being suspended. During a follow up meeting they were told that the army had got down to the 150 number and that the rest of the nurses including my daughter would get active duty. Just curious to know what info you have that would change what 5th Brigade is telling their cadets.

We're eager to see the OML list the end of this month. My son graduates in Dec. Since he attended LDAC in summer of 2011. he has already seen his accession score...95.

To be honest the info we get from our brigade counselors everyday. Perhaps they had enough cadets switch but all I am saying is that the guaranteed active slot is in the past and I have consistently ears that starting with 2014 numbers as reserve slots will change.

Let's say the cutoff for AD is around 75 OMS points and you have more than 75 points, is there a chance you still might not get AD?

The AD Selection Line is where all cadets regardless of source of commission are given AD if it is requested. The ones who get AD below that number are ones who have a guarantee source such as SMC graduates. For your typical ROTC graduate the AD Selection line is exactly that - above it you get AD, below it sends you to the reserves.

Hi there,

I just came across this forum after countless searching on Google to see if anyone have any insight on what's the OMS cutoff points for Active Duty going to be. For those Cadets going through Accession this Fall. I went to LDAC this summer and did good, received an overall S. I met with my PMS 2 weeks ago and he said I had 77.6 points but that was not everything. He still need to do his last evaluation and ranking. Plus the points I get for working part-time and being an SMP cadet. I know the cutoff for 2012 was 72 points. I was also told that even if you have more points than the cutoff that you not guarantee to get Active Duty. Can you please fill me in on what you think the cutoff will be this year. Also do everyone that are above the cutoff get Active Duty or not? Thanks

Acronyms???

Hiya! I hope you don't mind if I ask a few questions about this thread. First, is this thread pertaining only to Army cadets or do other branches have a similar scoring method? I looked up the acronym list, but could not find "OMS" or "OML". What do these mean? And lastly, if a cadet does not meet the score requirement for AD, what do they do? What other options would a cadet be able to consider? Thanks for the insight.

OMS = Order of Merit Score (raw score)
OML = Order of Merit List (all cadets ranked by OMS)
Not being selected for AD means you go reserves.
I can't speak for AFROTC but I'm pretty sure this is Army only. Navy/Marines all go AD.

Interesting tidbit DS told us about this weekend...may be a little OT, but it does have to do with AROTC SMPs/Ohio National Guard members. Apparently, in Mar or Apr 2012 the Ohio Guard changed its policy for SMP cadets who accept Ohio Guard's tuition payments. Previously, whether or not you went AD or Guard/Reserve you were NOT obligated to repay these tuition payments(in-state tuition at any Ohio public school). IF a cadet who swore into the Guard after the Mar/Apr 2012 cutoff now goes AD he/she is obligated to repay all tuition money paid by the Ohio National Guard. In other words, pretty much all Ohio Guard tuition payments to SMP's become a guarantee of guard/reserve duty.

Has anyone else from other states seen changes such as this? By financially discouraging Ohio SMPs from seeking AD service this could in a small way impact OML/OMS. DS's university takes a lot of SMP cadets and most do qualify for AD cutoffs historically. This policy will not impact our DS(swore in June 2011) but just thought it an interesting change in policy...
