CVW status?

I just received a CVW. How much do these play into my chances of an appointment?

I have heard around 100 CVW's are sent out. But then again, this is the internet. Regardless I am very excited!

I already have a Presidential nomination, so I am really hoping for a big envelope in my mailbox...

As a general rule, CVWs are offered to highly qualified candidates so receiving one is considered a good sign. Conversely, as with LOAs, not being offered a CVW should not be taken as a bad sign. There are many fewer CVWs than there are offers of appontment and most successful candidates don't get CVWs.

While a very good sign, it is not a "sure thing" that an offer of a CVW means an offer of an appointment is forthcoming. Be optimistic, but realistic.

And, congratulations and have a great time!

Mooradian-

What date is yours? I just received an invitation to the one on Sept. 20-22.

I just received one for that weekend too! Does anyone know exactly what we do for the weekend? I really hope I can go, but I've got a few other prior committments I have to sort out first.

I'm going on Sept. 20-22nd as well! I'm so excited that I get to see the Yard again, I'm counting the days!

Funny story I thought I might share (while a little off topic). When I attended the National Youth Leadership Forum, I got a chance to visit the Naval Academy. While I was there, I promised myself that I would not step foot on Bancroft Hall's steps again unless I was at I-Day. I guess I'll be breaking that promise, but I think the CVW is an acceptable reason, right?

Sept. 20-22. I will see you all there! Perhaps pm me and we can try to get in touch either before or after?

Thank you USNA1985. It feels good to know not everyone has gotten one. How many usually go out?

How many usually go out?

No idea. In my day (a LONG time ago) there was less than one candidate per company per WE who actually attended and about 7 WEs per year. However, that was some time ago and I'll defer to those who've attended more recently to know how many candidates are hosted each CVW.

I just got this e-mail tonight as well. I'm hoping I'll be able to make it to the September 20-22 weekend if at all possible.

Big Weekend

For those attending CVW, if I remember correctly, this is also 2nd Class Parents' Weekend along with the football season home opener. There will be lots going on. Take in all the sights and sounds and keep them in your memory. Remember how it felt to be at USNA because it will feel even more amazing should you be there as a midshipman next year. Cheers and good luck to all.

Not trying to get off topic, but there are many candidates that lurk/participate in these forums and strive to do their best in obtaining an appointment -- some successful and some not. Show some humility when posting about LOAs, CVWs, appointments, etc. While a select few will experience this joy, many many many other candidates will not. This isn't directed at anyone specifically, but I have seen patterns occuring in these forums. I'm not implying that you shouldn't post about being offered LOAs/CVWs/appointments, it's more how you go about doing it.

Thanks for your post. It's probably worth a sticky. I was thinking the same with respect to this thread. I'm not sure how watching a growing list of LOA recipients is helpful to the majority of users/readers/watchers on these forums.

two more cents

Last year when I started seriously putting together my resume, having the LOA stats as a goal (IE much higher ACT scores were needed and I needed to prep way more) was very helpful. I also signed up for things I normally wouldn't (and ended up really liking them like Boys State and Physics Club) seeing that they were listed on peoples LOA postings from last year. I know I should have just done my best but knowing a specific target was helpful for me (IE 18 pullups on the CFA as opposed to just doing my best at pullups). I dont think it helps the people who have already completed their packet though. You can always make a rule like they did on facebook, no more posting LOAs or stats.

My DS received an email inviting him to the 20-22 Sept CVW. During his B&G interview (20 Aug) he requested that he be considered for a CVW invite. His stats are solid, but not exceptional. He is not medically qualified as of yet (working on allergy remed). He did not get an invite to NASS though he did apply. Bottom-line, if you feel you are competitive, and want a CVW, I would recommend you request to be considered for a CVW through either your RA or B&G

I ate to sound like a broken record, but as a BGO I have had countless candidates with better "stats" than have been posted here or in other years who not only didn't get an LOA but, in some cases, didn't even get an appointment.

Please DO NOT ASSUME that if you achieve some specific "stat" you are guaranteed or even likely to receive an LOA because it is not the case. For example, I've had candidates with 800/800 SATs not get LOAs. Yes, having good "stats" helps across the board in terms of an LOA and appointment, but there is no magic level for LOAs. Every year I have great candidates with and without LOAs and I have yet to figure out why some get them and some don't.

First of all, just "joining" activities is not the answer. USNA wants to see people who stick with activities and take on leadership roles in them. Also, in life, you are much better off participating in activities you enjoy rather than those that you think will get you somewhere. USNA accepts people who were active in music and journalism and spirit clubs and art and . . . almost every activity you can think of. I promise you that an exceptional violinist who gets an "A" in AP physics is much better off than the "C" student who "joins" the physics club.

Obviously, every candidate should try to do his/her very best in all areas (academics, sports, leadership, ECAs). However, there is no "magic formula" to assure oneself of an LOA or appointment.

LOA or CVW should not be your goal. Nomination and Appointment is the goal. If you don't get a CVW talk to your BGO. They might get one for you. The "Magic Fomula " is unknown. DD had no CVW but a LOA, go figure. BGO got a slot for CVW.

ALWAYs good and right counsel! Chasing these can be like jousting at windmills. Keep your eye on the prize(s) ...
1. Getting 3 Qed which "qualifies" a candidate for appointment.
2. Getting a nomination ... you can leave home without it, but you can't get a room in Mother Bancroft without it! (NAPS or Foundation schools, yes. However candidates have literally no "say" about who gets candidacy to those options.)
3. Getting THE PRIZE = APPOINTMENT. Period.

Then staying "good" and staying "healthy."

And that's the name of THAT tune. :thumb::rockon::wiggle:

The observation I noted in my previous post had absolutely nothing to do with the posting of stats. Though, I share the same view of USNA1985 -- knowing the stats of someone else has absolutely no correlation of whether you will receive an appointment or not. While sometimes repetitive on this forum, a FR/SO/JR posting stats to see where they can improve upon (with the guidance from participants/BGOs/etc on here) might help a candidate. Additionally, having a thread (roster) dedicated to those who receive LOAs/appointments/CVWs can be beneficial (especially to make friends beforehand) and I don't think that is the issue. Once again, it is the MANNER in which it is posted -- remember that statistically speaking, for every 1 candidate on here that gets good news, probably 9 others did not and one should really take that into account when they post their own good news. My two cents: before posting great news about yourself, think how the "other 9" would think your post would come across -- i.e. is it a simple post just stating fact(s) or is it glorified to come across as arrogant/selfish.

Or joyful and proud! I say celebrate. And it's natural to do it with others! We don't have one-man birthday parties. Now, IF you invite others to your party expecting a gift? THAT's a problem. And as jadler suggests, so is arrogance. But that has nothing to do with doing a happy dance here. I say do it! You'll have few times in life with the highs that come in various victories in this highly competitive game. Yours is to worry about YOU. Not the "other 9." You have zero control with how your post might be received beyond communicating factually and humbly. The real question in all of this is not that your wonderful "next step" should not be celebrated, shouted to the Heavens, and glorified. It is merely who is being glorified. God loves great news of His candidates!

I find myself wondering where these ideas come from that we are somehow responsible for the receptiveness and interpretive feelings of others. We are responsible for but one. It is your parents responsibility to nurture humility, kindness, good spelling, appropriate pride, and glorification directed appropriately. Did you happen to see the wonderful African American gymnast for the USA? She had it perfect ...saying, "All glory to my Creator, all benefits to me!"

Congrats! We LOVE watching you and others dance! This judge keeps you "dancing with the stars" for at least another round!

P.S. Providing data does help others. The caution is right to not over-estimate or misinterpret what it means. Those are responsibilities for the "other 9." Not you.

Not sure where this dicussion is currently at, but regardless, thank you to all who have shared their 2c. I am really just wondering if the CVW is a positive indication, which I have been lead to believe is.
