If a candidate does not receive an appointment to a SA, and then accepts a 4 year ROTC scholarship, can they re-apply to the SA? Will they be liable for the cost of the year of ROTC scholarship? Or is it better to go to a college for a year without a scholarship if they plan on re-applying?

Yes, you can re-apply to a SA as a scholarship cadet.

As long as you do not start the first day of your sophomore year you will not be obligated to pay back the scholarship money.

If you can receive a ROTC scholarship, take it. Start your first year, re-apply to the SA if you decide that's what you want to do. If you receive an appointment during your first year at ROTC, great, you can leave with no obligation. If you do not receive an appointment then you can continue on scholarship with ROTC.

Much as I hate to say it I can remember at least 4 cadets who left Clarkson after one or two years to attend USMA in th elast 8 years. Haven't had anyone in the second year of their scholarship jump ship, so I'm not sure what that would entail, but other than having to repeat freshman year it's a win if you just can't live without the SA experience.

I can't imagine anyone leaving such a beautiful college and college town just to attend as SA. Yeah, tongue in cheek but I actually half mean it. Loved Potsdam.

I actually liked Clarkson's architecture for that period of construction - you can't say they tried to copy someone else's idea. Now SUNY Potsdam OTOH, well... enough said.

I found the town of Potsdam charming and typical of the Empire state at its best.

Nice bragging about the quality of your cadets, Clarkson!
