On the Coast Guard Academy website, it states that the average ACT score is a 27, not to be cynical but this seems a little low compared to the SAT average, is it actually a 27, if so that would be awesome for me.

also which states tend to be the most competitive for the Coast Guard Academy?

These are the median scores for the Class of 2016:

Math 640, Critical Reading 600, Writing 590
Math 28, English 27, Writing 26, Composition 27

Home state (or country, if you're living abroad) is really not considered during the application review process, so I would say they're all pretty competitive.

Thanks Objee....you are always a big help! BTW: are the Friday admissions briefings open to the public....or do they need to be reserved....How do you reserve a spot if need be....Thanks again!

Thanks Objee! My ACT scores are above the average that you stated however my sat scores are borderline average so should I just send my ACT scores or send both?

We request that students register online for our Admissions briefing and campus tour, but we wouldn't turn away someone unless we literally didn't have space for them in the briefing room. Students can learn more about, and register for, our campus visitation programs at: http://www.uscga.edu/visit

We always recommend applicants submit all their ACT and SAT scores.

These quoted SAT scores seem very low to me, I know when I read the 2016 EA stats on the board in the spring they were much higher - very close to 700 on both Math and Reading. Can anyone let me know what the source of this info was?

Our Office of Institutional Research runs the official class statistics for the Academy, so they're the source. I guess they could have made a mistake, but right or wrong that's what they/we published as ACT/SAT averages for the Class of 2016. Historically, EA averages are always higher than RA since our strongest applicants apply early and then the overall class averages will always be lower than EA/RA (combined or separate) since it will include CGAS (prep school) graduates, who normally have lower ACT/SAT scores.

Sorry Objee - I do know who you are but in my haste I did not read the name of the poster. I had been working from the EA stats quoted below and had not looked carefully at the overall stats. I knew the EA stats would be higher but I was surpised to see such a large spread.

Thanks again.

Wait if I apply early and do not get in will they differ me to the next wave of applicants?

Should I apply early action group 1 or 2 is a better question. I talked to a coast guard academy recruiter and he said my leadership is excellent, my g.p.a is a 4.2, I am a competitive swimmer, however my act scores are a 28 which is higher than the average but by only one point. Im also retaking my sats in october. Objee what do you think I should do? Wait for the regular admissions so i can retake acts as well or apply for early action?

No. Deferrals to RA are no longer used.

A very small number of EA applicants MAY be placed on a waiting list to be used to shape the class after all the RA appointments are offered, accepted, and/or declined.

If you apply for EA you will get a decision of "selected for appointment" (could be full or conditional depending on other factors as DODMERB) or "not selected for appointment."

If you are not selected for appointment, it's over -- move on to Plan B.

Does anyone know what the minimum ACT Math score an applicant needs to apply for the service academies, specifically the Coast Guard Academy? My daughter got a 25 on her Math and I don't think that's high enough. She has all of the other requirements, though and a lot going for her.

I recommend she study like the dickens, even if it means hiring a tutor or retaking a high school math class online, then retake it September 10. The CGA is happy to superscore.

My DD has these ACT scores:

English 35
Comp. 34
Science 28
Math. 28.

Are these scores good enough or should she take the ACT in Sept?

Her GPA is 4.00

Top 5% of class of 600
