Army ROTC interview

My son started to contact closest PMS for interview (#6 choice). Was told that it would improve his chances to have interview done at #1 choice school (6 hrs away). We do have visit set up at this school in about 4 weeks but will arrive Friday eve for Saturday visit day.

Son is awaiting email back from this school's battalion but I thought I'd ask here.

Interview

If your ds has a realistic shot of admission at his #1 school, I would do what I could to schedule the interview there. Not only will the PMS be more likely to give him a better interview than the #6 school, but it will put him on the schools radar.

Look at it this way, if you had to make time in your day to talk to someone that thought you were 6th best, how in depth would you get. You would hit the required points, turn in your score and move on.

We drove 3 hrs to my ds's number one school, the official interview lasted about 45 minutes then the pms talked to ds for about another 30-45 minutes about things not on the official interview, just getting to know him. At the end, he told ds that if he did not get the national scholarship, they would do what they needed to for him to attend.
 
I tend to agree.

Were you trying to get the interview completed in time for the first board, the deadline is fast approaching.

One thing to remember, every battalion/school that your son listed will be able to see his application. If your son does his interview at his #1 choice he could possibly get more favorable comments. The other battalions will see these comments and be more likely to check the yes box when they review your son's application. Checking the yes box lets Cadet Command know that the battalion would like the applicant at their school. This would give your son more opportunities for a scholarship.

A long drive with a good "Book on Tape" is worth the effort.

When is the next deadline? It 's his #1 in state school and parents preferred (0ver the plane ride to his real first choice)
I wasn t keen on him missing a day of school since I m assuming PMS doesn't work SAturdays.

I'd shoot for the interview at the #1 school as well. If he can't miss a day of school for this, then what can he miss a day of school for? Also, I don't know about Army, but NROTC Commanders "work" on home football game Saturdays. They will at least show up for the tailgate. It might be possible to arrange an interview in the AM of a Saturday game day since they'll typically be on campus some anyway... especially for someone coming from so far away. Heck, he might have a chance to attend the tailgate and speak with some cadets about their ROTC experiences in a relaxed atmosphere. I'm just thinking off the top of my head on this but it seems to me the worst thing that can happen is they say "No". If you can afford it I would do whatever to give your DS his best shot at this. If $$$ are an obstacle then by all means do it an the #1 in-state school.

In any case, I'd speak to the #1 school just to see what's possible and decide from there, rather than just ruling it out as an option. Of course you need to know what you can do on your end before heading into that conversation.

I vote for school day interview at school of choice

I would also highly recommend an overnight w/ the cadets
DS did an overnight, AM PT, shadowed a cadet, attended class and
got interviewed. He thought it was great fun, got to meet cadre and students,
shared a room with a cadet, came home with a proud GI haircut.
I thought getting acquainted and acclimated may have boosted his interview score a bit (?)

BTW: We attempted to do a game day/tailgating interview...
Alabama Iron Bowl, sounds funny now, chaos actually, had to make a return trip.

Good idea - my son would love that. Do they give points if they come with the GI haircut?
Being a swimmer he 's already got one!
