For those who receive an LOA and assuming they receive a Nomination (I know this is not a guarantee), how quickly would a Offer of Admission be issued by USNA? Second related question, does the candidate have a limited amount of time to make a decision once the Offer of Admission arrives?

Last question first ... 01 May is response deadline, I believe.

First question last ... It varies, but once all steps are clear, usually within a week or two.

Soon:smile:, and as we all know, not soon enough! :frown:

One of the final steps in this process is USNA testing a candidate's "patience factor." You don't want to fail this one, after all you've done to this point.

I wouldn't bet on a definite timeframe. An LOA+nomination is a guaranteed offer of appointment, presuming the candidate keeps his/her nose clean. At some point you will be made known! Notification is dependent on which nomination source USNA wants to charge, if it is a Presidential, it could be really quick; if USNA is waiting to hear from the MOC and the nominations haven't been reported, then it might be longer.

Additionally, if the nomination is a MOC, some tell their candidates ahead of time (before they submit the slate to USNA). Therefore, once again, it might not be a specific time after you are notified.

I think there might be some confusion here about this issue. The "keep your nose clean" caveat pertains to ALL appointments, as we know. And has nothing to do with WHEN an appointment is offered. In other words, if someone gets an offer in December ... and decides to knock of the neighborhood 7/11 mart in June as a sort of "last hurrah" before I Day? Well there would be no I Day. Period.

Now back to the OP question of

I continue to think, with few exceptions, the offer of appointment is issued with the ensuing round of offers.

As for which nominator is credited, that is a clerical funtion that can be determined virtually anytime, before or after the offer.

Am I wrong?:thumbdown::eek::confused:

Possibly....(I'm not sure WP's definition of "all steps clear," because in the view of the candidate, all steps might be clear once they receive notice from the MOC)

I'd agree that if a candidate has a nomination source OTHER than a MOC and has an LOA, then the charging could be a simple clerical function. This is simply because they have met the LOA conditions (presuming they are fully qualified).

If the candidates doesn't have a nominating source other than the MOC and they don't report the slate until January but notify the candidate in December, then the appointment isn't coming 1-2 weeks after...so just because you might be notified that your MOC nominated you (again presuming you don't have have another source of nomination, i.e. Presidential, JROTC, etc.) then I wouldn't necessarily say that you are guaranteed to hear anything shortly after, but how/when MOCs submit their nomination is on a MOC-to-MOC basis. In cases of multiple MOC nominations, an offer of appointment is likely to be made once the quickest MOC reports their slate.

So you could hear shortly after OR it might be longer. Hence why I say you can't put a definite timeline.

Seems to me, something nobody mentioned, is that you have to factor in the DoDMERB process, and there is no telling how long that takes. Even with an LOA a failure to get through DoDMERB successfully will result in the candidate not receiving an appointment.

I think the intent of the post is if they were waiting just on the nomination and had an LOA. But I'd agree, if one hasn't qualified on the DODMERB and CFA, the LOA will be conditional on those terms, as well. Of course, if disqualified by DODMERB, then waiver process would have to commence.

Right. Which gets back to it could be a long wait. Having the LOA and the nomination is insufficient. You also have to complete the physical qualification process.

:bang: Yo! :sadwavey:ProudSwimDaddy! Could you 'swim' back into this thing you started to clarify precisely what you WERE asking? Would help us all to sleep tonite!:help:

Sorry, I was offline at a swim meet tonight. My question was based on knowing that USMA's new policy was they were going to require an answer within 45 days of issuing an appointment. Based on that, if an LOA recipient for USMA got an appointment immediately after getting a nomination in Dec they might not have the opportunity to hear from the other academies before having to decide on the USMA appointment. I probably should have looked at the USNA website first, but I did after seeing Whistle Pig's response, and verified the May 1st day for USNA.

DD attended both USMA and USAFA summer seminars and loved both. She will actually visit USNA later in October for a CVW, and is very excited about experiencing life at USNA. This will likely be her only visit to one of the academies during the school year, so it will definitely give her a different view. At the end of the day she really wants to serve, I just don't think she has settled on a choice of service.

I appreciate everyone's input!!

Thanks

Answering your first question.

When DS received an LOA from USNA, the only thing missing was a nomination (meaning his file was 100% complete including DoDmerb, etc).
DS received a nomination from MOC on 11/25/2011 and it was updated in the CIS on 11/29/11. DS received a phone call from MOC on 12/9/11 notifying him of his appointment and the BFE arrived on 12/17/11.

Therefore, from the time nomination showed up on CIS, it took 10 days for DS to receive an appointment since he had an LOA and his file was 100% completed.

Thanks Team Mom! Took some ferreting, but I'm guessing you've got it for ProudSwimPappy! :thumb:

Ironically, our dates were just about the same on nom w/ BFE coming on 09 Dec. And what a great surprise, having gotten no call.

I was medically qualified on January 17th (the last requirement of my LOA), if I remember correctly. Notified of appointment on the 23rd, BFE came on the 26th. I'd say 1-2 weeks is about right.
