Army plans uniform changes, asks for soldier input

It may be the end of the road for the bemoaned blue Army Service Uniform.

The brass on Sept. 17 launched an online survey to find out what soldiers think about the ASU — the good, the bad and the ugly.

Soldiers have through mid-October to let their voices be heard. The survey is at www.armytimes.com/links/asu-survey and Army Knowledge Online.

Ousting the blue uniform is not the stated goal, officials say. Rather, the survey is a tool to ensure the ASU is the best it can be, and there are dozens of items addressed — everything from design, material and fit to the placement of unit insignia and tabs is on the table.

This quote is from the Army Times.

Before you run out to buy your soon to be commissioned 2ndLT their new set of Blue's, you may want to make sure the uniform, as it is now, is still in play.

These uniforms are not cheap, they can cost an average of $700.00 and it would be a shame to have them just collecting dust.

Of course at the speed the government and the Army moves it could take a while to make a decision. It might be a good idea to hold off until at least Feb/Mar before placing an order, this may give enough time for any changes to be made.

My experience: you have to buy and maintain the proper uniforms required at the time of commissioning regardless of any pending changes. Everything. And you are inspected to ensure you have them.

When changes occur, you have until the effective date to update your locker.

Trying to time things or hold off buying various uniforms never works out

Perhaps it is different these days.

In AROTC the cadets have the option to commission in either the Blues or the Greens, as long as they are all in the same uniform, of course this is battalion specific.

EDIT: I certainly was not advocating holding off a purchase. Just saying don't rush to get the uniform right now, unless your cadet is a December Commission. Most cadets will graduate in the spring, getting the order in by late February or early March gives them plenty of time to get it tailored. If they do tweak anything before then you won't have wasted funds purchasing items that may have been changed.

It is not, and I would caution anyone from taking any advice from that communist rag.
