So i have had my first month of AROTC so far and I absolutely love it so far. I honestly dont like my school that much, but I love ROTC and my detachment. Its has only reaffirmed that a military carer is what I want. Might be a little premature to say that so early, but I do love it. With that being said one thing that has been made pretty clear to me so far is that getting an active duty slot is going to hard and probably even harder in 4 years when it is my turn. So my questions is can you transfer to an SMC such as Texas A&M or Virginia Tech and join the corps of cadets as a sophomore? I am assuming it would be to late to try anything for spring. Also I am on a 3 year AD, so any details on how that could work. Also my desire to transfer to a SMC is not just toe make sure I get an active duty slot, but I want more of a "military" experience and the unique experience A&M and Tech over with the corps of cadets and the traditional students seems like an awesome experience.

Want a more military experience? Ok got it.

Want a guaranteed active slot? I don't get it. Even though the army is downsizing it really isn't that hard to get an active slot. I did absolutely no ROTC extra currics and only did some tutoring, CTLT, 1 years of sports and a couple minor things and my OML score would have easily gotten me active if I wanted it. Seriously if you want active get a 3.3 GPA (Easily doable with most majors), 275+ APFT (You show up to PT and you will get this), just use common sense at LDAC (Do you have a pulse?) and I can almost guarantee you will get active.

That being said I don't know if SMCs are run the same as WP where you have to do 4 years as I have never heard of anyone transferring. For now I am going to assume you can't transfer unless you are from a military JC? Either way I think this question is better suited for the SMC sub-forum.

You need to be accepted at the school you are trying to transfer to,
AND get the permission on your PMS, the new school PMS and both AROTC Brigades
It may help if you can find a school in the same Brigade you are already in.

That being said you had better have a great GPA, attendance, PT score etc., to even be considered.

But - first things first; you should finish a semester w/a perfect AROTC attendance record, work harder then the rest, get lots of A's and then talk to your chain of command, about a more 'military experience'.

I don't know about TAMU, but the VT Corps of Cadets accepts transfer students. Be aware that even if you are an academic sophomore at VT you will be a 'new cadet' when you start in the Corps. That means you will attend New Cadet Week and go through the new cadet training system in your first year (or your first semester if you apply for and are granted an 'early turn' to upperclass status).

As far as I know, Norwich is the only SMC that does not accept transfers into the CC. However, TAMU might have seperate admissions requirements/processes for students wishing to transfer into the CC. As what everyone else has said, if you transfer to any one of these schools, you still have to complete your Rat/Frog/Fish/Knob year before you can officially be recognized as a cadet.

Norwich definately does take transfers. Within the CC you are a freshman even though academically you are a sophomore. Key thing at Norwich or any SMC is making sure the rotc requirements are met. LTC can take care of a missed year of AROTC.

Norwich is an excellent school. I highly reccomend. The Corps provide a valuable experience.

Sorry but I am very partial to Norwich.
