I recently returned from FT and was approved to graduate spring 2015 for civil engineering. If I wanted to switch my major to a non-tech major (arabic), could the same graduation date still apply? or would they roll it back to 2014?

So....did you not like the answer you got the first time you posted this question 2 days ago.

the question I asked2 days ago was if it was possible to switch. Now that I found out it is, I would like to know if my date of commision is the same regardless of major. Two different questions

****NEVER MIND ... just realized you are Air Force ROTC, not Army ROTC *** below answer would apply if you were AROTC.

If I'm interpreting the clues in your post correctly, you are currently approved for 5 years to accomodate your Engineering Degree as shown on your 104R form.

You're asking that if you switch to a Degree (Arabic) that takes the normal 4 years to graduate, would the new 104R that you would submit still showing 5 years be approved? I don't know. CAN you graduate in 4 years, assuming you might need a summer to catch up on some non-Engineering prereqs?

The general principal that governs your Cadre's and Brigade's decision is that the Army should not pay for more than 4 years unless necessitated by a major like Engineering. If you're not going to graduate with an Engineering degree, why would the Army want to pay for an extra year?

I believe caracas is in AFROTC, not sure what form they use to plot the graduation date but I don't think it's the 104R.

caracas,

Sorry, but the first question you asked on this thread did not state you were approved to switch majors, it just said, if I wanted to switch majors.

Has your command given you approval to switch majors from Tech to Arabic. I would think if they had they would have told you the required graduaution date. Nobody here is going to be able to tell you that.

Your correct about the years to graduate when switching majors when it comes to the Army.

My older son switched from CE to History at the start of his sophomore year. His original 104R was a 5 year plan for CE, as soon as he switched to History he was required to graduate in the original 4 years.

Patton would have loved that choice, but the modern Army, not so much. In the end History (military) proved invaluable to Patton in his battle strategies.

Yep, that was about as much of a 180 degree switch he could make.

This was a kid that had no idea what he wanted to major in college, went with what the aptitude test in high school said. He did well the first year and then interned over the first summer....absolutely hated it, I think the exact words were, "I'd jump off a bridge if I had to this all my life" To each his own I guess. Future plans?, he wants to take the LSAT but with flight school starting so soon after graduation and the fact it takes up 99% of his time, he said that will have to wait.

For now he wanted something a bit more active and challenging, I guess that's why he decided to go Aviation.

So far his degree choice has not held him back within the Army.

Caracas,

This is really an academic question for your college. Can you manage to graduate May 14 with the switch in majors? If the school says you will graduate in Dec 14, than you need to run that through the det. to get their approval since you are switching your commission date.

Not only are you switching it, but you are moving the FY yr group to FY15. Budgets run Oct-Sept. As a contracted cadet that means money they would be spending on you that was not planned for originally. It also means manpower changes. If you look at many of the AFROTC cadets that commissioned in May, even with a rated slot they are starting to arrive on base for their AFSC training.

Talk to your academic advisor to see if you will graduate on time. If you already know you will, than this is all moot, because obviously you know it is the same commission date because it would be May. The only thing that may change is your AFSC which is still a yr from now before you find out if you going non-rated. Rated, you also might want to ask the det if Arabic is considered a critical manned field, which means they will probably not even allow you to apply for rated.
