West Point's new Commandant

A sorely-needed change. Now they just need to get rid of the philandering Supe.

I wonder if that change is next? The Supe has been there since July 2010.

I bet the Supe will finish out his 3 years and retire.

This new Comm will be 4th Comm for the Firsties.
Wish WP could keep the good ones longer.

Beginning to sound like WP and KP are having a shared experience!

What is the Supe being investigated for? And philandering? First I've heard of it.

Old Commandant

I think he did an outstanding job! He's a good man as well.

Proud To Be 83!

Outstanding Job

In my humble opinion:

-Zero tolerance for hazing is one area. I know there has been a lot of pushback from current cadets but given that my class (and his) lost 500 cadets during four years (and that number was a normal attrition for a class during those years), losing fewer through early resignation (20+ in 2012 versus 120+ in 1979 during Beast) allows for a longer evaluation (by both West Point and the individual) of whether someone would make a good Army officer or not. I remember very few good leadership lessons from my first year but a lot of bad ones, especially as it concerned female cadets.

-Revisiting the alcohol consumption question is another. I don't know whether the current policies are the correct ones, but this area certainly merits a close look.

Part of leadership is taking a stand on what you believe is right even it isn't popular.

Finally, he's a classmate-enough said!

Hazing has been illegal in the Army for some time already and you'll be hard-pressed to find anyone who will argue for it. This past summer, beast cadre were not allowed to yell, corrective PT was almost totally nixed, completely done away with during the school year, and we can't forget the fact that "Beast" isn't allowed in our vernacular anymore!!! Sounds too scary for cadet candidates. I think there's a point of ridiculousness that can be reached and we kind of reached that point. Its laughable, and according to all of my peers who spent their CTLT at basic training down in Ft. Jackson, it doesn't sound any different in the big Army.

About alcohol - one of my previous instructors made this point and I agree with him. All our firsties commissioning in a few short months will one day be responsible for the lives of 30-40 people. But according to the comm, we can't trust them with hard liquor! Yes, we had a few guys make some headlines and I do think group punishment works, but in this case, I'm not sure it makes sense.

I have to say, I have yet to hear anyone say anything positive about the current comm - most cadets are glad to see him go.

Are you sure? I'm fairly certain that is just gossip produced by the prestigious and world-renowned cadet rumor mill...

I don't get my information from cadets. That came to me through faculty. Whether anything comes of it is another matter.

Regardless, it'll be great to see a change.
