Application Checklist has finally been added to the Bear's Den, so applicants can now check the status of all required (plus some optional) application items.

The EA1 deadline is Monday, 10/15 and the EA2 deadline (11/15) isn't far off...we start reviewing applications next week!

Bear's Den Status Not Up To Date!

Hi Objee! After completing my USCGA application on 10/9, I checked out the Bear's Den site and found it to be inaccurate. While the USCGA admissions page shows my application to be complete, Bear's Den does not.

Per the Bear's Den, admissions doesn't have my SAT or ACT scores, my transcripts, my PFE (288 by the way), or my interview (completed after the first Cadet for a Day). Unable to resolve the huge disparity between two USCGA application status data bases, I emailed the admissions officer for my state. He responded quickly, basically saying to ignore the info on Bear's Den and believe the status on the Admissions website.

Needless to say, I'm spooked. This is too important to leave to chance. Since cell phones are forbidden during the school day, I outsourced a call to Admissions to my Dad. Went straight to voice mail. Requested call back not received. We have no choice but to keep pressing for straight answers before the 10/15 EA1 deadline.

Do you still stand by the accuracy of the Bear's Den? I for one cannot recommend it.

First, it's important to understand the difference between the statuses shown on your application homepage and the Application Checklist on the Bear's Den. Your application homepage shows when items are submitted, which is good to know since submission date is what we use to determine whether or not you've met a deadline, but the Application Checklist shows when items have been processed and officially entered into your record. We rarely process transcripts, ACT/SAT scores, interviews, or PFE scores before a student submits their application, because it would be a waste of time to do so until we know which group (EA1, EA2, or RA) they're going to be in or if they're even going to submit the application at all. Depending upon the volume of application items needing to be processed, and there is obviously a lot of people submitting things the week before a deadline, it can easily take 3-5 days for your previously submitted items to be entered into your record...so if you just submitted your application on 10/9, your Application Checklist may not be updated until early next week.

Do you still stand by the accuracy of the Bear's Den? I for one cannot recommend it.

The Application Checklist on the Bear's Den accurately shows when your application items have been processed, so as much as I value your feedback and opinion...I do "stand by" it and recommend it be used in conjunction with the statuses displayed on your application homepage to fully understand where your application is in our process. If you are Patrick, born 10/21, with a brother named Austin, you're correct that all your required application items have been received, so now you just need to be patient and wait for them to be processed. I'd give your Admissions Officer another call if your Application Checklist isn't updated by 10/17. We still have humans processing our applications, so occasionally mistakes are made...

Objee my gym teacher filled out my physical fitness test on the website but on bear's den it is not there, why is that? Also my ACT scores were sent to the academy on October 1st, I asked the ACT organization how come they have not been received yet, and they said the Academy only accepts them twice a month is this true, and if yes the representative from the ACT gave me a number to go give to admissions that would pull up my scores.
Thanks

It's most likely the same situation that I explained to Run5K in my previous post...we may have received your PFE, but if it's not shown on the Bear's Den - it hasn't been processed yet.

We "accept" scores whenever we receive them, so what I think ACT may have meant is they only report scores to us twice a month? If they gave you an alternative method for us to retrieve the scores from them, instead of waiting for the scores to officially be reported to us, you could always provide that information to your Admissions Officer.

Also I am going to the "open house 2.0" on November 10th, my admissions counsleur said i could request an interview there, how do I do that?

I know we conduct on-campus interviews during Cadet for a Day programs, but I'm not sure about Open House programs. Unfortunately, there are just so many more visitors (compared to Cadet for a Day) during the Open House programs, plus it's only one day versus two days, that it would be difficult/impossible to interview everyone. I would recommend speaking to LT Barron, the Assistant Director for Campus Programs, since she coordinates all visitation and would know for sure.

Objee: Where can I learn more about the Bear's Den website? Is there a certain point during the application process when a login is issued? If not, how does one go about requesting one? Thanks!

If you're applying to the Class of 2017, your Bear's Den username/password is the same as your application username/password. If you're a junior, or younger, you should have received an e-mail shortly after creating your USCGA profile with your Bear's Den username/password. If you didn't receive this e-mail, you should be able to contact your Admissions Officer to confirm your account information.
