LOA questions

Hi I just received an LOA two days ago (it was dated October 10) and I have two questions:

1. Around how many LOA's are sent out each year?
2. I sent out for a presidential nomination, and in my CIS under the nomination section it says Presidential - Received September 27. Does this mean I don't need a congressional or senatorial nomination to attend the naval academy?

I still have to seek nominations because I'm applying for the Air Force academy, so I'm just wondering if I should be still be seeking them for the Naval Academy.

Thanks.

I would be on the lookout for your offer of appointment soon! I'm about 97% sure that you will not need a MOC nomination for USNA. Don't let your guard down though, push for that nomination to USAFA. Congrats!

USNA has never published figures on how many LOA's they send out, so I doubt anyone can answer that.

First, congrats on your LOA!

1. Around how many LOA's are sent out each year?

No one other than USNA knows -- and the number can vary by year. Based ONLY on what I'm reading here and my own experience as a BGO, USNA seems to be sending a few more, and sending them out earlier, than last year. But I could be 100% wrong about that.

Yes. If you have a confirmed Presidential nom (if you are eligible, you get one -- they're not competitive) and an LOA, you are guaranteed an appointment assuming you passed your CFA and medical. You do not need an MOC nom for USNA.

See above. You need to stay in the process for a USAFA nom as noms are SA specific.

Would it hurt to still check the naval academy as well as the air force academy on my nomination form? or should I just leave it blank?

So how does one get a Presidential nomination if they are not competitive? Do you not apply for them? Is there only a special group of kids who are eligible? If you have a Presidential nom, are youi n for sure presuming CFA and medical are OK?

Although it's a black and white case of "you're qualified or not", you must apply for a Presidential Nomination and supply your supporting documentation proving you are eligible. Details here: http://www.usna.edu/admissions/stnompres.htm

If you pass the CFA and medical and you have an LOA you are definitely in. The LOA requires you to have a nomination. The nominating source does not matter.

Not to quibble, and it would be anything but for those with LOAs and nominations of any kind ... But "in" is not really "in." Rather it means an offer of appointment is extended.

Which may be rescinded for any number of reasons.

Just to be clear, precise, and careful.:thumb:

If I'm a sophomore in college and decide to apply to USNA this year, when will my file be reviewed by admissions? Also, would I be eligible for a LOA? I was on the waitlist last year and have a 3.5 GPA as an engineering major plus ROTC cadet. I'm aware that USNA waits for the first semester grades for college freshman applying before they review their file, but does that still apply to me?

WP, the same statement can be applied to anyone with an accepted offer of appointment up to and including I-Day, it doesn't matter whether you have an LOA as of now or receive the offer one week before I-Day. I think most people on this board understand if you get a terrible case of Senioritis or don't keep your nose clean, that there is a risk of loosing the offer of appointment. It really is a matter of semantics. I'd say 99.999% of folks on this board understood kinnem's post.

Are you saying it depends on what the meaning of "in" might be? Sorry, not "semantics."

With a pool of 30,000 or more of brand new, novice readers each and every admission season?

But even if we lived in the world where we all "got it" one would hate to be that 0.001% who didn't after he'd been offered, accepted, and then broke his leg riding his motorcycle home after being kicked outta school for having been caught doing dope that he'd bought after stealing from the student council till that he'd once been president of?

It happens every year to someone, and I'm sure it wasn't a shock when the appoinntment was rescinded (whether it was medical, academic, or conduct reason).

I view appointments or LOAs (assuming the remaining requirements are met) as you are "in" UNLESS ...., not you AREN'T "in" until I-Day. Otherwise, why wouldn't everyone have LOAs/conditional offers until a month before I-Day, since in your view, appointments are still conditional until I-Day?

Edit: If I was applying for a job in March, had an interview today and was offered the job (and I accepted it), would I not consider myself to "have got" the job or would that not apply until March, once I was assured that I didn't get a DUI, run someone over, stole something, wasn't in a wheelchair, etc?
