Yet another LOA question

I looked and could not find an answer in the old threads, so here goes. When looking at the Class of 2016 Profile, DS appears to be a very competitive candidate. His application has been complete for a couple of weeks except for the BGO interview writeup. Does anyone have an idea if his application will be considered for an LOA without the BGO write-up?

Thanks in advance,

I don't really know the answer, but it appears to me they put quite a bit of weight on those BGO interviews. I would think they would be MORE likely to consider a completed file than one missing a large part such as the interview.

According to my BGO, I will not receive an LOA because my file IS complete. LOA's (according to him) are for applicants who need to complete the CFA or DoDMERB. I did not receive an LOA because my old SAT scores were lacking and by the time I updated them, I had completed everything else (hopefully, haha). Now I just have to wait for that acceptance letter!

This just second hand info so not sure if it is 100% right, but seems logical to me.

Goal Is Appointment

My understanding of an LOA, as a parent, is it is an offer of appointment contingent upon other factors such as DoDMERB clearance and/or receipt of nomination. It is offered for those candidates USNA deems highly desireable. The vast majority of incoming plebes will not receive an LOA but a direct apponitment. This should be the goal, an appointment. As many have read here, there have been cases where an LOA recipient did not obtain a nomination, thus nullifying the LOA.
Cheers

Ah the nomination! Forgot about that part of the LOA for a second:) I do have a Presidential Nom, just slipped my mind. Sorry about that!

You can receive an LOA without the BGO interview. I disagree that LOAs are only provided if your packet is incomplete. Even this year, I think one of my candidates received one when most, but not all, of his/her packet was complete; the remainder had complete packages other than, maybe, DODMERB.

The purpose of an LOA is to provide what comfort USNA can that the candidate will receive an appointment. I find they are rarely given to those with Pres nominations unless medical is outstanding. Because the person has a nom, once medical and CFA clear, an LOA+the Pres non = an appointment. So no use sending out the LOA. Happened to one of my candidates this year who already has an appt in hand.

So, if you are a Pres nominee and have cleared medical, and have NOT received an LOA, you probably won't get one. That does NOT mean that you won't ultimately receive an appointment.

Thanks for the info!

One question- If I were to receive an appointment sometime in December, is there a time frame that I would have to accept it in? Because, USMA is right there with the USNA and I am torn between the two.

Accept By May

My son received his appointment in Jan 2012. The appointment letter stated he needed to accept his appointment by a specific date in May (I'm forgetting the exact date) or 5 days after receipt of the appointment letter, whichever occurred later.
Cheers

DS got his LOA within two days after submission of his CFA, which at that point in the process, was the only thing he hadn't already completed.

Was the letter dated before the date he submitted his CFA? i.e. was the LOA already given without his CFA?

A couple of things about LOA's: First review the response from USNA1985, she is right on. Second, LOA's are not automatic, but based upon Admissions assessment of the qualities and performance of the individual candidate. There is no set time for LOA's to be issued, receipt of an LOA need not precede an offer of appointment - as you will see after the first of the year. There is no upper or lower limit to the number of LOA's that may be issued, but from casual observation the number seems to be lower than we realize. Best wishes to all of you.

I have heard of LOAs being issued with a wide range of incomplete items. Since the Naval Academy does not advertise it's criteria for an LOA, there is no way of knowing at what point in the application process you are "eligible" for an LOA.

In fact, the LOA form letter has almost every possible item needed to complete an application as potential incomplete items. The LOA comes with the remaining items checked - reminding the candidate what they need to complete.
