Petreaus resigns

The rule is every 5 yrs for TS, so I guess he does.

Just me, but I think the affair wasn't with the neighbor across the street, I think it was something much bigger.

If the country accepted Clinton, our President having an affair, why can't we accept that with Petraeus?

Not a conspiracy theorist, just curious.

OBTW, for posters that don't know, I am a woman and a wife. Affairs are personal issues, not professional issues.

Now if he lied, or covered up the affair because they reported to him than that IMPO a different story. That is professional life mixing with their personal life.

My thoughts as well.

The country apparently thought this wasn't a problem for Clinton either.

Apparently, it's not a great idea to be in the intelligence business and have an affair. The temptress may be the bad guy/girl.

I'm beginning to think that they put 'infidelity' stuff in the water at West Point that the future Generals drink.

I'm sure that does not lie with USMA alone.

Shocked to hear and disappointed...what a sad way to end your career

VERY VERY Odd

I find this news extremely odd for two reasons - firstly since when has a CIA Director ever had to resign for this level of offense? As if Petraeus is the first?!? Secondly - the timing of this is just too weird - Friday late pm? That is when news that someone wants to bury is announced. I would think it was shame for his actions except that he is/was scheduled to testify about Benghazi next week in a closed hearing with the House Intelligence Committee. I have to wonder if leaving his post now absolves him from testifying? If I were a member of the Committee I think I would insist Petraeus testify whether in office or not.

I see where you`re coming from (I mean, hey, Clinton didn`t have to, and that`s a higher position than CIA Director) but I was under the impression he voluntarily resigned, nobody was forcing him to or something like that. It`s too early for the big details; those come later, I suppose.

I am sure the Hill would force him to testify.

97133M he did resign voluntarily.

You are certainly correct that Friday afternoon is the "news release graveyard" time slot, but then again, neither Petraeus nor the White House nor the CIA really wants to highlight the really sad story of a spectacular public service career brought low by a scandal. So that part doesn't seem odd to me.

In terms of the dynamics of the resignation vis a vis the President, below is a link to an interesting post on Tom Ricks's foreign policy blog. Basically, in the post Ricks reports that his sources say that President Obama tried to talk Gen. Petraeus out of resigning, but Gen. Petraeus felt that he had acted dishonorably and needed to fall on his sword, so to speak. Ricks also speculates that perhaps someone in the military with an axe to grind may have leaked the info about the affair, but you can't tell from the post whether Ricks has sourcing for that or is just speculating based on being an old journalism hand.

Timing....

So OK, it appears he's been cheating for a while. Timing of his resignation still strikes me as odd - to taint his upcoming testimony? Maybe I am getting too political for the forum on this one, sorry, couldn't help myself. Thought you experienced folks might have more insights or sources and maybe I was missing something.

At least one press source is reporting that the mistress had obtained access to his email (presumably his work email). If true, that would be a significant security issue.

Evidently he wasn't the only West Pointer drinking it in this case.

Really disappointing, I know a lot of young officers who looked up to him.

Except that he shouldn't have anything classified in there.... only SIPR.
