Just some quick questions. I am currently attending ROTC on 3 year scholarship (maybe 3.5) to a public school in NC. Im pretty sure i want to transfer next year (fall 2013) to a new college. Ideally I would like to got to VT because after my first semester I feel like a SMC would be the best option for me.
Main Questions:
1. How much does keeping the college you would want to transfer to in the same brigade affect the chances of being transferred?
2. How do I go about starting the process and when should I talk to my cadre about it?
3. Should I contact the other school ie. VT?
4. Should I just wait to make sure I get into the school I would want to transfer to before I say anything?
Thanks for the help guys!

To my knowledge scholarships are not portable. If you choose to transfer, you will likley not be taking your scholarship with you.

I agree with Jcc123.

As for VT, did you apply LY, were you accepted? VT is a state college and only accept 25% from OOS.

I say/ask this because VT is also a school where historically they have not taken anyone off their incoming freshmen wait list in yrs. That is how many matriculate every yr. If you were not accepted LY it maybe an uphill battle from an admission perspective, unless you have a great gpa at ECU this yr.

You will most likely be doing this without your scholarship, don't expect the scholarship to follow you to the new school.

From your previous post's you currently have a 3 year AD scholarship. In the post above you said "Maybe 3.5'. Here is a tip, if you are sure you want to transfer next year, do not accept the extra .5 upgrade to the scholarship if offered, unless you have talked to your current cadre about your desire to transfer.

I believe the above posters are correct about the non-portability of the scholarship. All of the scholarship transfers I'm familiar with occurred prior to matriculation. Keep in mind that your scholarship is at a relatively low dollar level since it is in-state at a public university.

However, rather than relying on us amateurs you should contact Cadet Command for guidance on the feasibility of and, if permitted, the procedure for a scholarship transfer.

Edelahanty has a point.

VT does not offer IS for OOS. Out of state TUITION only for 12/13 yr is $25,900 compared to 10,900 for IS. If it goes up even 5%, which is low, they are looking at 32K for next yr.

sjbd,

We all know you never wanted to attend ECU. We hoped that once you got there you may have changed your position.

It appears you haven't.

I would go forward if you really want to get out of ECU, but understand the cost you may need to ante up with, be it loans, or whatever,

College is only 4 yrs. It is part time compared to AD.

JMPO, but I think you would be better off trying to transfer now back to your original choice last yr. I believe it was NCST.

Here are my reasons why:

1. You are an NC resident, and many of your HS friends are there.
~~~ College is also part social. Going to VT, many of these students have had 1 yr of bonding. You will enter as a soph.
2. VT campus is not like Greenville, it is like Goldsboro. A small town. If you are from Cary or Raleigh, Blacksburg will be a small water town.
3. SMC life
~~~ You have tasted freedom. VT cadets will live in cadet dorms. A lot of the freedom you have now will be pulled back.

As I have said, I have questions. You never wanted ECU, went for fiscal reasons. You now are saying you want an SMC, why didn't you apply to VMI or Citadel?

Have you walked on VT. Our DD is there and to say she loves it is an understatement. She is not ROTC. Our DD would have rather had pins placed in his eyes because where VT is located and their academic program.

I love VT. I am pro-VT.

OBTW, EDelahanty, has a great point, if you are now going to go 3.5, because of transferring, it could be that the fat lady already sang since now you want to transfer to a college that will cost them 75K AND you will not graduate come May 2016. Graduating in Dec. will be FY 2017, not FY 2016. You are asking HQ to give you 2 things...OOS tuition AND not reporting for AD in the yr they planned for last yr when you got your scholarship. You are messing with not only their budget, but man power needs.

I wouldn't talk to your unit. I would pm Marist or Clarkson. They can give you the best guidance.

I would contact admissions to see if you are a competitive candidate. Be prepared for the vague answer of just apply. In VA. VT is NCST. ECU is VCU. http://www.admiss.vt.edu/frequently-asked-questions/ Transfers need to supply HS transcripts, college transcripts and SAT/ACT scores. Hence why I asked did you apply to VT ly.

Main Questions:
2. How do I go about starting the process and when should I talk to my cadre about it? Now. Cadre are completely aware that school choice is more important than Unit choice. If you don't like your school, you will have difficulty overcoming that and being a leader in your unit.
3. Should I contact the other school ie. VT? Sure, why not. Find out if they have any track record in approving a transfer of a scholarship from another Unit.
4. Should I just wait to make sure I get into the school I would want to transfer to before I say anything? See answer to 2. I think you should get into the other school before you make anything formal... actually I think you HAVE to be accepted to the other school before you can start anything official.Thanks for the help guys!
see above.

hey thanks for the info guys, i have read before that scholarships are transferable just not that easy. I am going based off this http://forums.military.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/2791910496/m/5390069972001, not sure how right it is or not. thanks again for all the info. As crazy as it sounds I want to go to an SMC. I did not apply to VT or VMI last year because at that point in time I didn't even know 100% sure that the military and ROTC was for me and not to mention I only had a 3 year and I couldn't afford out of state on my own for the first year. But after the first semester, maybe im jumping the gun here, the thought of having a non military career is just something I dont want to do. I feel like the structure a SMC offers would not only benefit me for future military service, but academically as well. As far as getting into VT I think I have a very good chance I finished high school with a 4.1, have a 1900 SAT, and i dont see an outcome where i could have below a 3.5 for my first semester of college. thanks again guys!

The answer in the post you reference is regarding high school scholarship winners transferring their offer prior to attending college, which is not the answer to the question. If you want to try to take a scholarship with you when you transfer you will have to do two things, ask your current Battalion if they don't mind giving up an allocation, and convince your gaining Battalion to accept you. And, since you are going from one Brigade to another you have to convince your current Brigade to give up an allocation (to an SMC no less). If you can't see yourself staying at your current school it can't hurt to ask, but I would be very shocked if everything goes smoothly. And it does sound crazy that you want to attend an SMC (in my opinion). Structure is not something that will benefit you in the future...structure is something that allows you to put off the responsibility of thinking for yourself. I'll take someone who thrives without structure in a future officer any day of the week.

VT is in the same brigade as NC thankfully but it doesn't seem like that makes much of a difference. i guess if i do try to transfer i should just keep it NC. thanks guys

I think ultimately, yes. But while you're making inquiries it doesn't hurt to ask about both VT and another NC in-state institution. BTW I think you'll have better luck getting accepted into NC State. That's based solely on my experience of DS getting accepted into NC State but not into VT (ended up at South Carolina). YMMV.

If I cant go to VT I would consider another NC school like NC STATE. Would it be more likely that a transfer be possible if I went to a school in state like NC State instead of say USC or VT?

IMO, more likely? Yes. Still unlikely? Yes. But it shouldn't hurt to ask about either. The worse they can do is tell you no.

remember even if VT is the same brigade, you would be an OOS cadet, your tuition cost maybe a factor.

Curiosity.

Is the scholarship tied to the brigade and the cadet, or is it tied to the college, the brigade and the cadet?.

I was always under the assumption it was the latter, thus why in the spring scholarship recipients ask to transfer the scholarship to another school.

Part of the reason why I say that is I recall clarkson or marist saying the numbers of recipients at their school dropped.

Virginia Tech is one of the 6 SMC's that fall under 1st Brigade, so you will be asking to transfer your scholarship from one Brigade to another.
