DS is home on Thanksgiving break from his math/science boarding school. we have been going through the list of NROTC schools with him - he is intrigued by the dual major of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at UF.

Any knowledge of this university/unit?

Apparently they're the best unit in the good ol` US of A: http://nrotc.ufl.edu/. Got a kick out of that, I'm sure every other NROTC unit would say the same about their units. They do have a good unit though, I know someone who was in NROTC there and they liked it a lot, I don't know any specifics though. And UF is a pretty good school, from what I understand.

I can't speak specifically to their NROTC program, but I can speak to the quality of the school. It's a very good public school. Both my husband and father-in-law are UF alumni, and my high school aged son has several friends that have been lucky enough to be accepted there. Their admissions requirements are becoming increasingly stringent with each passing year. Here in Florida, they have kind of earned the reputation of being the "Ivy League" of Florida state colleges. The university has made it very clear that they are trying to appeal more and more to international and out-of-state students (it's all about the revenue). They have excellent programs in medicine/medical research, law, engineering, & business (accounting) to name a few. (The university was the inventor of Gatorade). As a side note, we have an acquaintance that is a Brigadier General in the Marines and went through ROTC at UF. So, I think it would be safe to assume the program is pretty good!

Another excellent school your son may want to consider is Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach. It's considered one of the premier engineering schools in the nation. If your son is offered an ROTC scholarship to that school, they will cover 100% of the room & board for the cadet. I know the naval scholarships work differently than Army (that's what my DS is going for), so I don't know if your son would have to be awarded a particular type of scholarship in order to get the room/board. There are other people on this forum that could speak to that issue, but it would definitely be worth it to look into.

One last thing -- this is something I've been told by the wonderful people who regularly post on this forum. Your son should make his education the first priority and pick the school that works best for him from that perspective. The ROTC experience should be secondary.

I wish you & your family the best of luck!

P.S. Go Gators!

I can't tell you about NROTC other than what the building looks like, but can tell you that UF is a fantastic school. My son is an AROTC cadet at UF and LOVES both the program and the school.

Any questions you have, ask away.

Go Gators!!

Heads up to the OP, the application deadline was November 1st. Hope your DS got his app in. Decisions come out in February. Also, another thread is saying that the UF NROTC scholarships are full.

our son is just now a junior in H.S., so he/we are trying to sort out all these universities now, preparing for the NROTC scholarship app in the spring. thanks, though!!

really appreciate all the posts! would you say that UF campus/faculty/student body/city is friendly and supportive to the military and ROTC kids?
