China's new shiny aircraft carrier

There is a big difference between landing on a carrier and actually conducting combat ops off a carrier. Seems to me (casual reader) that effective combat capabilities would be more than 2 years away.

We announced our strategic "pivot" to the Pacific some time ago. The Pacific has been a strategically important area for the DoD for quite some time.

p.s. SU-35s and their clones are great looking aircraft, IMO.

I don't think that they can do underway replenishment, but I am not certain. Limits utility of the carrier.

Hi everybody.

I just herd about China's new aircraft carrier, and their Navy is going to start training on it. The "experts" say up to two years till the pilots and crew are ready for combat. Looks like the Pacific is going to be a center of interest in our Navy again.

Any thoughts, comments, or concerns?

My opinion,

This is about China sending a message to her neighbors

I am sure some folks in the Navy sees it as a good justification strengthen our Naval capability beyound what we have now.

I haven't followed Chinese Navy but my guess is their anti-submarine and air defense capabilities are not that great. Do Chinese Navy have missile cruisers? I doubt China will send a single aircraft carrier out to intercept a US carrier group in the middle Pacific.

Perhaps I have read too many Tom Clancy/Larry Bond novels, but does make sense to use the effective range of aircraft + effective range of anti-ship missile to determine who can shoot first.

I aslo think the U.S. Navy will have an easier time sinking a Chinese aircraft carrier than Chinese sinking a US aircraft carrier.
