I hope all our midshipmen and cadets have safe travels over this holiday and that everyone has a blessed Thanksgiving.

I'm sure interesting stories will be exchanged over family celebrations on Thursday and I thought I'd start a thread where folks could share them. I know we, or I at least, would love to hear them.

And congratulations to all on their many accomplishments so far this semester. :thumb:

Younger son is home from school for the week.

Older son will spend Thanksgiving at Ft. Rucker with friends, then a weekend in Atlanta, we will miss him this year, such is life in the military.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.

Not too much happening here on the NROTC front. DS served in the color guard for the Navy Ball, and continued to do so during football games and a pass in review. He's "afraid" he is "doomed" to serve in this capacity for the rest of his college career. He is expecting to get a break from serving in any billets next semester, after having served as squad leader for two semesters; but still plans on participating on Drill Team again. In the meantime we patiently await word on the sideload scholarship application.

Some bittersweet news is that, since Dad has to pay the lease on the apartment anyway, DS wants to stay in Columbia over the summer. He upheld his end of the bargain by landing a summer job as a freshman orientation leader. He attributes his ability to land this job, which he is really excited about, to the leadership skills and focus he acquired through NROTC. Frankly, so does Dad. Meanwhile Dad is dreading mowing his own lawn this summer.

Thanksgiving was good in Ohioland. Turkey leftovers still in the frig, but DS will take some back to school today. DS interviewed tatoo artist while he was home.....yeah, can't legally stop him, but this whole tat thing is a little nuts:wink: But I did tell him if he got the contract I wouldn't give him too much grief and I get to research all shops for health violations....:thumb:

Cutting the grass doesn't bother me -- its shoveling the damn snow(DS away, DH firefighter, always seems to be on duty when the stuff falls:biggrin:)

LOL regarding the snow. I enjoy that myself because it reminds me of my youth; but then in NC I only get to do it once in a while and sometimes its years in between. Glad you had a great visit. Remind your DS he'll need a waiver for that tat he plans on... at least Marines do. I expect the same is true for other services. My kid is waiting until he commissions and I'm hoping he changes his mind before then. He wants an eagle globe and anchor on his shoulder. I keep telling him no service member should have tats anywhere on their body identifying them as such.

Our visit was too short. Since we had Thanksgiving at grandma's we don't really have leftovers either, but I know the pulled pork we had last night will be going back with him today.

Last year we had no real snow here in SW Ohio either, but judging from the squirrel activity this fall I think we might be in for a long, white winter:eek:

Now that he has a better idea about his tat, he does need to check in with the cadre - probably won't need a waiver, but needs to make sure he's within "standards". Wants a left upper chest "shred" of skin over the American flag showing through. Patriotic and all, but I agree completely - hoping he'd change his mind..... Will settle for no blood borne diseases and a good artist if he has to go and mark up his body. Right now my only ploy left is he can't donate blood for 6 mos. after its done and he's been a regular donor since high school.

After eating nothing but turkey leftovers since Friday, pulled pork sounds pretty amazing:biggrin:

I'm fortunate enough to have my det and family in the same city so I didn't have to go far. I had a good Thanksgiving. Couldn't convince my mom to deep fry the turkey she's afraid our house would burn down.

And what kid doesn't think of food when home from school? Glad you had a good Thanksgiving and a short commute.

Hello everyone,
I have been real busy at work and at home which I think is a good thing. DS spent Thanksgiving in the Florida Everglades in the last phase of Ranger training. Hopefully we hear from him next week with good news and we will leave for Benning for another graduation.

Sad News, RP, who I have written about here often, has passed away. Really good man. No way now to tell DS about it. They were good friends. Think I will tell him when we go down to Benning. It will be tough for him to hear.

Ranger training in the Everglades. Does it get any better than that!
Sorry to hear about RP, NorwichDad. I know it will be tough on your DS. From prior posts I always had the impression RP was a big influence on him.

Thanks Kinnem,
DS is living the dream as he says. Loves everything about it.

It was Rudy's time to go. As you know Marines can endure a lot of pain. He has had quite a bit the last few years, too much for even a Marine. It was time.

It's a blessing then. Semper Fi Rudy!

NorwichDad, I was sorry to hear of the passing of your family friend Rudy Pinto, some of whose stories you have shared over the last years. As we have read in recent months on SAF and elsewhere, 2012 has not been kind to many veterans of World War II, most of whom are 90 years old or more.

RP's passing made me think of another generation of men who survived a terrible war and lived a full life span. Here's a link to a site about the last major reunion of Civil War veterans. It took place in 1938 at the 75th anniversary of Gettysburg. If I recall correctly, the movie footage it contains appeared in the 1990 Ken Burns series about the Civil War.

2013 will be the 75th anniversary of the 1938 reunion.

NorwichDad,

So sorry to hear about your family friend.

I see that strength and determination in my 92 year old father in law who served in the Navy during WW2, he was a great inspiration to both my sons.

Glad to hear your son is nearing the completion of Ranger School, a real accomplishment.

Sad to see this WW2 generation leaving us. I hate to generalize but this generation knew how to party. Family and Celebrations were important. They loved life and being with others. For the soldiers their experiences made them appreciate home. For those on the homefront the loss of many friends and neighbors also made them love life.

Something we need to remember about them.
