ROTC credit

apparently if you take JROTC in high school it says that some colleges may give ROTC credit for the time in JROTC. is this true and if so, how does it work specifically? also, does NGCSU offer this and if so would it still count if you took MCJROTC?

I suggest you contact the commander of the dets that you would be member of they would give the best answer...just call them. Since those credits will most likely not apply to your major would it really make a difference, you're not getting commissioned without a degree and you can't get a degree in ROTC

I thought what they meant by credit was that you wouldn't have to take one or part of one or more of the ROTC elective classes you take as part of being in ROTC, thus maybe allowing me to take another elective course in a different subject or at least not have as much course load.

I would assume that this would be at best kind of rare to avoid taking one of your ROTC classes based on JROTC credit. You could contact the PMS to see if you could get credit but I would feel pretty confident in going out on a limb and say that VMI for example would not agree to letting you skip the first semester of Military Science. The MS courses you take are sequential and build off each other- so proficiency at the second or 3rd semester of MS is in part predicated on mastery of the basic skills learned earlier. If I were the ROTC detachment CDR I wouldn't take it on faith that a JROTC program taught basic field craft and officer responsibilites? Again- despite the JROTC site that says they may give credit for JROTC I don't see anything posted anywhere on the Army ROTC website or VMI website that indicates that they would grant constructive credit for completion of JROTC. Like anything - you could always contact the PMS to ask the question directly as there is an exception to everything.
FYI I've attached the course descriptions of the Army Military Science courses for 4th classmen at VMI are below (which I believe are standard for any AROTC detachment)


MS 109. Foundations of Officership
Orients cadets to information and competencies that are central to a commissioned officer’s responsibilities. Cadets will gain a basic understanding of Army values and culture, officership and leadership skills. Cadets will also learn time management, physical fitness and basic military skills. Cadets have the opportunity to attend one field training exercise, focusing on practical application of basics skills.

MS 110. Introduction to Leadership
Continues the lessons of MS 109, with greater emphasis on the principles of ethical leadership. Cadets will continue to learn the basics of leadership in demanding tactical scenarios, and will practice basic military skills such as marksmanship, map reading and first aid. Cadets have the opportunity to attend one field training exercise, focusing on practical application of basic skills and teamwork in collective skills.
