Hi everyone,

Not sure if this topic has been addressed before, I couldn't find the original thread if it was.

Are FFRs or RCs allowed to tell candidates their admissions status (qualified, competitive, admissable, etc.), or is this something that is kept secret?

Thanks in advance!

I have no idea what the answer is (I am a candidate as well). But what is the difference between competitive and admissible, out of curiosity?

Admissible is higher on the admissions scale. So if you're designated as admissible, it's better than competitive.

I believe they are, as my FFR has informed me of my admissions status (even though I did not ask). If for some reason they aren't allowed to tell you (oops!), I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to ask.

It is no secret. I am the FFR in my Congressional District. I inform all of my candidates when their status changes. We have access to a web site that shows the status of each candidate. Ask your Regional RC or your FFR.

Are you able to get in without being 'admissible'? By having a 'competitive' status?

Yes, a lot of people do. From what I've been told, you need to be in the very top of your class and have SAT scores around a 2100+ to be admissible (I may be wrong). I am deemed competitive (class rank: 2/141, SAT: Math-620, CR-590, Writing-600, have taken honors/university courses). I also have very strong leadership/extracurricular (Boys' State, Boys' State Governor, Boys' Nation, student council, ect.), and fairly strong athletic/physical fitness (1 soccer varsity letter, 2 basketball varsity letters, maxed four CFA events, and I am a Jiu Jitsu state champion).

So, it does seem as if my SAT scores are keeping me from gaining an admissible status.

As a FFR we have access to a site that gives the current status of each candidate. As information comes in on a candidate the Regional RC makes a judgement call (based on the info he has to date) on the current status of each candidate. This status can and does change as new information is received. We are allowed to tell the candidate their current status.
THIS STATUS DOES NOT DETERMINE WHETHER OR NOT YOU WILL BE ADMITTED. IT IS JUST A JUDGEMENT AS TO WHERE YOU STAND AT A POINT IN TIME.
The difference status are:
Admissible: Top candidate based on current information
Competitive: Good candidate based on current information
Risk: Does not look too good based on information received at this point
Undetermined: Not enough information to make a judgement
Closed: File closed - not a competitive candidate

As info is received the status can go up or down. For example - if you get new improved SAT scores you might go up a category.

Status

Big Nick,
Based on your training and/or experience can you say what percentage of 3Q candidates fall into the admissible category and the competitive category? Thanks!

I do not know the overall pecentage. In some ways is is not impoortant as this status does not determine who gets offers - it is just a status at a point in time. I do know that many admissionable people do not get in and many competitive people do get offfers.
Remember these statuses are one RC's judgement. When your file is submitted to the Admissions Board (several admissions officers) they can and do sometimes have different opinions and judgements.
Just keep trying to improve your record

The actually the column heading in the field force site it "Candiate Potential," so calling it status is somewhat misleading.

I have seen many candidates that are "admissible" that completed nothing on there application.

My FFR told me that admissable meant that you are fully qualified and that as long as you pass DODMERB and get a nomination you would be deemed qualified. Once qualified, there wouldn't be any major reason why you wouldn't be able to get in... Kind of confusing

Hunter21: I think what your FFR was saying is that if you are admissible, someone in Admissions has deemed you academically highly qualified (and perhaps also physically qualified). All you would need to be triple qualified is Dodmerb's classification of medically qualified. Then, if you have a nomination, you are eligible for appointment.

However, last year, according to the 2016 class profile, there were 2,629 triple qualified candidates with a nomination and only 1,193 admitted. So, your FFR is correct that once you are triple qualified and nominated, there is nothing to prevent you from being admitted, except for the size of the class and where you stand in your nomination pool (unless you are the principal nominee).

Well I already have my noms/DODMERB in placed, so would being deemed admissable come before being 3Qed? My FFR told me that I was admissable back in May when I had my interview.

Well if your FFR told you in May that you are admissible, then I would take that statement at face value. If you are waiting for a 3Q letter, I believe others have said that they are sent at different times, depending on the schedule or inclination of the RC /Admissions Officer at West Point for your particular region. If you haven't received one, you could always send an email and ask where you stand at this point, and if any additional information is necessary to determine if you are 3Q'd.
