Does anyone know if my chances of receiving a nomination are higher if my congressman knows I have received a LOA from the Academy?

From what I have read on here, it can't hurt... they may be more likely to put you on their slate because they have a bit more assurance that you will not be a wasted spot. Good luck!

I pretty much agree MMMom, except that there is no such thing as a wasted slot... someone on the slate will be accepted. I can't believe there is a congressional district in the country where no one on the slate is qualified.

Not true. If no one is found 3Q on the slate, then someone from that district will not be charged to that MOC. It does happen.

As far as helping/hurting, it really depends on how the MOC views that. If your district is EXTREMELY competitive and you received a nomination from another source, they MIGHT NOT nominate you in the hopes others have a shot at receiving an appointment.

Surprising, but thanks for the info.

If I were a MOC and knew someone with an LOA already had another nomination I wouldn't nominate him. One is good enough. I'd use the slot for someone else... but then I'm not a MOC.

Thank you for all the replies.
My district is very competitive as I already know there are already 5 other students in my district who have Letter of Assurances to USNA. Would a Member of Congress be willing to give a nomination to all 6 applicants with loa's?

I would definitely let the MOC's know about the LOA. Each MOC is allowed to nominate 10 candidates for their allotted slots, usually just one per class. In this example if there really are 6 LOA's in the one MOC's 10 nominations, only 1 would be charged to the MOC and the balance would be charged to some misc category that the academies use. The Navy LOA states that you still have to get a nomination and pass the medical review. OBW, I learned last week that USNA has sent out less than 100 LOA's to date. It seems highly suspect that there would be so many within one congressional district.

Hi Grad/Dad,

Yes my MOC have been notified by USNA that I have received a LOA. My LOA stated that the letter I had received was also forwarded to all of the MOC's that I have applied for a nomination. The LOA also stated that I only needed a nomination in order to receive an appointment.
My B&G officer said that the district that I'm from is probably one of the most competitive this year. Surprisingly, the other 5 are my friends or a friend of a friend and all of us only need nominations in order to receive an appointment. Do you know if it would it be possible for all 6 of us to receive a nomination though?

You get on that list and you are in. I was MD-03 and me and a bunch of my buddies who applied all had LOA's and got put on Mikulskis slate for her nomination top 10 or whatever. 2 weeks later, all of us who had LOA's received our offers of appointment (and accepted). Best of luck

As I said earlier, each MOC gets 10 nominations for each of their allotted slots. If all 6 have LOA's then all 6 should get in. I am sure this is accurate if the MOC uses the standard competitive nomination method. Which means they submit 10 names and the academy decides which one to charge the MOC. If the MOC designates a Principal nomination and 9 alternates, however, this may not be the case. Check with your BGO. He/she will know which method your MOC's use and should be able to definitively answer your question about the 6 LOA's.
