I am a senior that has applied to Kings Point. My status just changed from "conditional" to "principal". I was wondering if anybody knew when I would receive the next letter from Kings Point.

Christmas present

My sons was changed to principle today also. You should receive a letter in a couple of days, and you will need to respond to it promptly as it will state. Good luck and enjoy the ride. Great present this happy time of year.

Congrats to you both. The day DS went principal he was already at school so I had some fun. I went up to high school with a tape measure and got DS called to the office. I knew there was only 5 minutes more in that period and the office staff had been very kind in letting him use phones, fax machines, etc during the process so they were game. When DS got to the office with everybody standing around I started measuring him. He said what are you doing? I said, bubble wrap suit! He knew what it meant. He was stunned and relieved :thumb:

I received my letter in the mail three days after the portal changed to principal online. Does anyone know the deadline when you must respond to the offered appointment? Kings Point is my number one choice, but I am waiting to go on a final visit before officially signing the paperwork.

Congrats!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

(you will receive the letter very soon. and yes, KP13M/D is correct -if your DS is "set" with his (her) decision, then make sure to get the papers signed and sent back immediately. I recall we faxed a copy of the signed paper as well as snail mailed it. DS called days later to make sure they received it). Congrats- and welcome aboard!

Admissions Open House for the Class of 2017 Appointees

I received my letter in the mail three days after the portal changed to principal online. Does anyone know the deadline when you must respond to the offered appointment? Kings Point is my number one choice, but I am waiting to go on a final visit before officially signing the paperwork.

Sailor13- there is an Admissions Open House for 2017 Appointees. It is scheduled for MONDAY 15 APRIL. I recommend your DS calls Admissions to find out more about this and they will answer your ? about a final deadline. The school will also mail you info about the Open House- but if you want to book air fare/ hotel early to save $, then do so. (if anyone needs hotel/ car rental/ taxi info, I'd be happy to give suggestions). I recommend everyone in the incoming class of 2017 ATTEND the Admissioins Open House.!! You will learn very valuable things that you just wouldn't find out otherwise. Whether your child is 100% set or still deciding.. this visit is a must! Hubby and I took DS out of school and flew into NY for a 1 night stay when we went to the Open House. It was a great visit...sat in on a very very valuable "talks", took a tour of the campus, talked to current midshipmen, met other incoming parents, and seriously learned very valuable info. This visit solidified DS's decision. I recall some kids signed their letters at the Open House. I advise you to call Admissions and ask them about what you should do now- esp if you "need" that final visit before a decision is made. Some kids also schedule over night visits between now and the date of the Open House- and that helps them decide. Irrigardless, this Open House is a MUST for the parent(s) and DS's/ DD's of the class of 2017. It is NOT mandatory, but I strongly recommend it. :thumb:

I always have to give the flip side of aooga's thoughts on this one. She is right BUT.......
DS had already gone for a visit in the fall AND he and I had read every word here on SAF and anywhere else information was available. He had already visited USCGA as well and had decided to make a full commitment to KP even before the answer from USCGA. He was sure. We did not go to the openhouse and still do not feel we missed anything other than our ( mom and dad) opportunity to see the campus. We waited until Parents Weekend after Indoc. It is a pricey trip and given the choice Parents Weekend was definately the right call for us. They say two visits are a must. One being Parents Weekend plebe year and other being Graduation Weekend. Everything else is gravy. I like gravy. I went last spring and hope to go again this spring. Roundtrip airfare home for breaks can really add up throughout the year too especially since you may not know they will be available to come home due to activities they are involved in including sports and waterfront teams. Even though it is a great opportunity to attend open house please don't feel you will be woefully unprepared if you don't.
That said, one visit before signing seems like a great idea.
Side note- after everything I read about KP and bought in to about the campus itself we were pleased when we saw it. Even right after the Hurricaine we thought it looked great. DH said, I thought the place was going to be decrepit from what you all had said. he said this as we were standing in the square looking towards the waterfront with a picture perfect, chamber of commerce wheather day waiting for the raising of the flag and our first glimpse at the Regiment of Midshipman and the best-ever game of Where's Waldo!

Open House

Lynpar; I always have to give the flip side of aooga's thoughts on this one. She is right BUT.......

Lynpar and I disagree on this topic. (but that's ok, Lynpar is a good parent). ~~~I DO remcommend going to the Open House. We went.:thumb: We are glad we did. Hundreds of other prospective students and their parent(s) also attended the Open House as well. It's a WONDERFUL event and you DO gain valuable information. As stated, it's not mandatory. But whether you are still making up your mind and want that final confirmation visit, or your child has definitely and excitedly made up their minds and signed the papers and are 100% determined to go, I still say GO to the Open House. If you book air fare early, it's cheaper. We stayed one night- flew in the night prior, attended the Open House, and then took the last flight home that night. DS missed one day of school. This trip got him excited... he met future classmates... we met other parents... we took a tour of the campus and heard "those in charge" give valuable talks. They had a parent session in the auditorium where we were introduced to the Deans, the Superintendent and the Commandant. It was very significent to hear them speak. They also had a ? and answer time for the parents that proved to be very valuable. The attendees (future class of 2017 students) left during part of the parent sessnion and went to have a private talk with older midshipmen whom gave them some very valuable helpful hints for INDOC. I loved the lunch that they provided... and we were able to speak "one on one" with midshipmen during lunch and during the tour and we asked them ?'s ... the upperclassmen were great and very polite. Again, this is a great event. I strongly recommend going. If anyone needs suggestions for car rental/ taxi service/ hotel... I'll be more than happy to help. (if flying into LGA, it is recommended to stay PAST the Academy) Congratulations to all the new Attendees and their families! :thumb:

Aooga, thanks for your post detailing what happens at the open house. Hoping that DS gets an invitation! We are nearby, so have no cause to miss it.

Just curious, could you give one example of something you learned on that visit or was it general exposure kind of thing? Thanks!

Congrats to Sailor94 and KP13M/D and Sailor 13.

Principle is another status I am not aware of. Is that the final status that one receives when they have an appt? Or does that have something to do with receiving a principle nomination? Or is that the status everyone receives when all the "conditions" are met?

I just received my letter from Kings Point that I officially have the appointment. I have visited the academy three times already and I am planning on going down for the open house again, but I live nearby. Principal means that the academy has offered you a primary appointment, basically that you are in. Thank you for all the congratulations.

Since everyone does not accept their appointment to KP, KP sends out more appointments than it has room for, e.g. KP may have room for 300 incoming plebes and they send out 320 appointments. The first 300 to sign and accept their appointment get in. If your acceptance is number 301, you may be put on the standby list.

I can't absolutely confirm this is how it is done today, but this was the setup a couple years ago. In any event, you went through the effort to get a Congressional Nomination, possibly precluding someone else from getting one who really wants to go to KP or any SA, there shouldn't be any question in your mind about signing and returning the acceptance letter immediately!

Mman5247- We did not wait for the letter about the Open House to make our travel plans. We learned about it from an older parent, called the school to confirm, and then made air and hotel arrangements at that time. The letter comes much later explaining the Open House... if you are "close" then you are fortunate and don't have to worry about air arrangements and it's something you can just put on your calendar. If you need hotel suggestions I can PM you.

It was a general exposure kind of thing but so much more as well. I tried to explain it earlier but you just have to "go" to "get it". They spoke of INDOC and helpful hints for that, packinig stuff, what happens during INDOC, when to show up at INDOC, when not to, etc...we were able to talk one on one with upperclassmen and ask them ?'s, my DS said the one on one "talk" they had in the church with "just" the midshipmen was very good. We were introduced in the auditorium to the Super, Comm. and Academic Deans and we heard them speak. Capt Johnson- I think I have his name right-??? it's been a few years) (Head of Admissions) was hysterical. The ? and answer part with the parents and all the "high ups" was very good as well. This is more than "just" a college visit. This was pretty special and I can promise you that anyone that attendeds would be happy that they did. INDOC will be in early July, and time will fly from now to then. Anything and everything that you can do to prepare yourselves for this journey is a good thing.
Best of Luck to you and Congrats again.

DD status changed to Principal yesterday, and received the Senatorial letter today (we found out who gave her the Senatorial nomination). Waiting for the Letter of appointment. Super excited and thankful for a wonderful Christmas present. Congrats to all, KP is an awesome school!

Merry Christmas. I hope it all works out well. Now is the time to remind DD to stay safe and not hurt herself, enjoy the rest of senior year but not to jeopardize what she has worked hard to achieve.

congrats!

DDG,
Aloha, great holiday news for you, congratulations.
Just something to think about, not to be Debbie Downer, how does DD like cold and dreary? For us cold, gray and dreary is the winter norm. I imagine from Hawaii that can come as a shock. The call the second trimester "the dark days" ( or dark ages) at KP for a reason. Not that someone from a sunny place can't deal with it is just she may want to get used to the idea before she gets there. If DD will be involved in a winter sport that can help. For instance swimmers are used to never seeing th sun for months anyway :shake: ( oh yeah, up north we swim indoors)
Having said that, the autumn season with crisp air and changing leaves are gorgeous and spring will be amazing too.
Happy new year and welcome to the KP family. I am the crazy aunt who says obnoxious things at holiday gatherings

LYNPAR,Hawaii is not as warm as alot of folks think, it got down to 65 degrees this morning! J/K :)
We try to take our girls off island at least once a year since we've moved here from the Bay Area. The Bay area do get cold and dreary also, but I'm sure not as cold and dreary as KP area. We were in KP back in June this year, the first three days were down in the 50s, then the rest were hot (110 degrees). Then it rained hard too with patches of flooding.
As for DD, we'll have to break out the parkas! She is excited to go.
Mahalo for the insight.
