Will a raise in my SAT scores do anything at this point?

I am currently a community college student and I have a 3.42 GPA (as of the first semester) my SAT for CR is 550 and MTH 470 (obviously my academics is lacking) besides the academic aspect I have tons of athletics I have participated in and have held a lot of leadership positions in sports and SGA (former vice president at my CC) I also have interned and have had jobs. When I took my PT test I scored above the national average for men on every event, sadly I was out-competed for nominations due to my SAT scores (haven't heard if I have gotten the VP nom or J/ROTC nom). Hypothetically speaking if I manage to get above the 600 mark on MTH or CR will I be able to be admitted into the academy or go through the Prep School. I forgot to ask this question to my minority admissions officer. Need some advice guys (oh yea I am also from the 11th district of VA)

Thanks!

For you SAT scores to count, it must be this upcoming SAT testing this month, as the application deadline in Feb 28th.

My opinion, with the current SAT scores, not likely. Higher Math score should improve your chance of getting to the Prep school (I am assuming that you are a URM).

I have already signed up for that SAT; So you assume I won't have a shot at the prep school unless my math score go up? and what is a URM?

If you are interested in taking the Prep School route then you should let your admissions officer know. Then that way if getting in direct does not work out, then your admissions officer can advocate for you to get into prep. That's what I did and to get into USMAPS 2012 class. I believe you're fine when it comes to prep, but still try to make your file stronger by preparing then taking the SATs because USMAPS has a limited number of spots. Have you tried taking the ACT?

I am actually stronger in the SATs. I have been told that I don't have to infrom the admissions people that I wish to go to prep they automatically decide for you. Also, do you think its shameful to go to prep at the age of 20-21 then graduate from USMA at 25 in 2018? essentially taking me 7 years to get a B.S. degree (after all its WEST POINT. It shouldn't matter should it? I just don't want to live a life saying "boy I wonder what career I would've had, had I gone to USMA")

I still suggest that you mention it to them. When I applied during my senior year my admissions officer asked me if I wanted to go the Prep School route and I told him yes so he put my name in with a group of people who were being considered for prep. From then the board decided if the people in my group were strong enough candidates for prep. After that my admissions officer told me that I was a shoe in and I got my Offer of Admission in March. As far as age goes it's not shameful at all lol. In my class we had 22 year olds going on 23 there. One of my friends was about to go into his junior year at Ohio State but applied to USMA late and was sent to Prep. He's 21 now as a plebe. And you're right, at West Point it really does not matter. I'll be going into my plebe year as a 20 year old (I'm at a civi college this year).

Can you tell me about your academic stats and a little bit about yourself? we are both the same age and if I do end up going USMAPS I would like to develop a close knit community with thoes 20 and older.

DHC... USMAPS and civilian Prep are completely different things, in case you weren't aware of that, but I'm sure you are.

In high school my overall gpa was a 3.2 :/ and my ACT was a 24 (I didn't take the SAT). So compared to me academically I can say you have a sure shot at getting in USMAPS, but it depends on how competitive each class is. In prep school you take the ACT and the SAT again so you can raise it. They didn't do that much of test prep when I was there, so you would really have to relyon yourself to improve.

what class were you in high school? (class of 2011? 2012?) so let me get this cleared up, you got into the prep school with the stats you mentioned above. (3.2 GPA 24 ACT) let me tell you that you this too, the class you applied for; 2016, had some tough competition and you were selected to prep!!?? thats pretty cool dude.

I graduated high school in 2011, graduated from prep in 2012. I'm at a civi college now admitting as a "returning cadet".And yes, I got into prep with those stats lol, but trust me there were others who had lower stats and others who had higher so prep is a good mix of people...cept the smartest ones go direct unless they got sent to prep due to injury

I graduated from high school 2011 like you as well my class had three DIRECT appointments and one prepster (Lake Braddock Secondary Burke, VA) Why did you go to a civilian college after prep school rather than go directly into the academy? now will you go directly into the academy? and how many enlistees were at prep when you were there?

Well, I was apart of the big group of people from Prep who did not get in to West Point due to the academy being way over their capacity for appointments. I was told to reapply for this year, which is why I am at a civi college. In all honesty, I would have surely gotten in if I had not been mediocre, but by the time they got to my group it was a bit too late. I have to prove that I'm not mediocre by attending this college. That's why I've been telling others that just because people with super low ACT scores and people with Ds and Fs from prep got in before does not mean that you will get in with mediocre grades. Because you never know what will happen. As far as prior service guys... there were prob about 25....

Thats ridiculous dude, to my understanding you are essentially saying that USMAPS isn't always the promising way into USMA. My admissions officer told me that its not really hard to get into USMA after USMAPS; all you have to do to make it, is obey your your superiors (if there are any) perform well on PT tests and improve your academics. Basically as long as you are there you will get into USMA as long you do the work. This leads me to my next question, Is it actually as hard as it is to get into USMA from prep like it is from high school or college? how much does the academy take from USMAPS? Also, couldnt a Cadet Candidate stay an extra year at USMAPS if he/she didn't make it into USMA?

Jeez, according to that statement Sisyphus should be able to get the stone to the top of the hill every time. I think you might be underestimating the effort involved.

It used to be that easy. Like I stated earlier, people with the Ds or Fs in a class would still get in. That's what some of the staff at USMAPS told me. Also, last year's Command Sergeant Major of the Corps of Cadets bragged to us that before he got in to USMAPS he had a 14 ACT, when he retook it at USMAPS he got a 18 -_- (He was a football player, but that does not mean anything because 2 very good football recruits in my class were in the same position that I was in). I was even told by the USMAPS deputy commadant that I would be fine, but of course I wasn't. I found out something though. What really led to me not getting in was that my TAC officer did me wrong as well. If you want to hear that story just send me a private message.

I can't remember the exact numbers but something like 80 or 90 % go to West Point. Once you are in the prep school, you are really only competiting against yourself to be academically qualified, not against others. From high school or college to West Point, you compete within your nomination category, so you could be competing against 9 other kids from you Congressional district.

If you are attending the Prep school, you either have Active Duty or Reserve Nomination or can get the Superintendent's nomination, if you needed it. So if you break down the numbers, 85 appointments for active duty soldiers, 85 appointments for reserve soldiers, and 50 Supe's appointments (some of it will be used for direct appointments). Direct appiontment for soldiers are not high. Some Prep kids also get Congressional nominations, than they could get an appointment by winning the Congressional appointment or from the National Waiting List. As for some Prepster that might appear academically weak - West Point do grant academic waviers.

Prep School is a one time deal, no do over.
