On a previous trip to DC, wife and DS discovered the flagpoles at the entrance of the National World War II Memorial honor the Merchant Marine (as well as honoring Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Army Air Forces and Coast Guard).

Today, they discovered a nice permanent exhibit in the National Museum of American History - "On the Water: Stories from Maritime America". DS especially enjoyed the "Answering the Call (1917 - 1945)" section. As a new poster, I'm not being allowed to include a real URL, but there's a Smithsonian web page at amhistory<dot>si<dot>edu/onthewater/

Next visit will be to the Navy-Merchant Marine Memorial.

There is a fairly creepy Merchant Marine memorial in Battery Park in NYC...

Is the Navy Merchant Marine Memorial you're talking about on the VA side of the Potomac? I feel like I used to drive up it when i lived in Alexandria. Looks like the breaking water on the bow of a ship.

Yes, between the Pentagon and the river, near Arlington National Cemetery.
