MY BGO contacted me a week ago saying that the Admissions board found me qualified:thumb:, and Im just confused about a couple of things. First of all, I am confident that I will obtain a nomination from my Representative, and if i do what will my chances of getting an appointment be?

Also I was looking over some of the number of the class of 2012 and wondering if the 2196 candidate found qualified also obtained a nomination????

Number of applicants with an
official nomination............................. 3,838
Nominees qualified scholastically,
medically and in physical aptitude..... 2,196
Offers of admission................................ 1,537

Yes. What I understand is that this number represents those who qualified and also got a nomination. Can I ask you, how long ago was your application complete? Congrats on being qualified.

About a month ago I guess.

So how do they reach the final 1537 offers of appointment?

Let's look at some of the information you have:

Number of applicants with an
official nomination............................. 3,838
Nominees qualified scholastically,
medically and in physical aptitude..... 2,196
Offers of admission................................ 1,537

Note that not every qualified applicant (scholastic/medical/CFA) will get a Congressional or Senatorial nomination.
But note also that some candidates are eligible for Presidential Nominations (they have a parent who is active or reserve with sufficient military service, or retired military).
I suspect the nomination number is TOTAL (Congressional/Senatorial/VP/Presidential) - with some candidates getting nominations from several sources.

Note that not every applicant who gets a nomination is necessarily fully qualified (scholastic/medical/CFA).

Note that some of the appointments are to enlisted who are selected to attend the academy (and that number includes those completing NAPS and going to USNA).

Further information to break down numbers further is not readily available, and the data isn't that significant. The reality is the candidates should not focus on parsing the data further, but doing everything possible to ensure that their own application package accurately reflects the individual, and shows the candidate is a better choice than many of the other candidates!

What happens is the Admissions Office starts sending out offers. Usually they have a target number (about 1200). The total number of outstanding offers won't cause the target number to be exceeded if all outstanding offers are accepted.

Usually, they will have about 1200 offers issued by 01 April. As some offers come back declined, then the Admissions Office will go to the waiting list and issue additional offers.

Offers of Appointment keep trickling out - and some offers get made a few days before I-Day. (Imagine how some student who thinks he/she didn't make the cut is asked, 2 - 3 days before I-Day if they want to come!! - It happens!)

So - at I-Day - the Admissions Office can talley up the number of accepted offers and the number of offers that were turned down - and that is how you get the number in question!

Based on last year....

(2,196 3Q'd + nomination and 1,537 appointments)

....if you have a nomination and are tripled qualified, you have a 7 out of 10 chance to get an appointment.

Keep in mind that there were 659 (3Q'd candidates with noms) who did not get an appointment.

I contacted my BGO regarding my status--my app was complete the middle of August. He told me the only info he has is that my application is complete. I have a CVW invite for this weekend but I am getting concerned that I have not gotten notification about scholastic qualification. My MOC interview is the weekend I return from the CVW. Surely the admissions board must have considered my app by now. Is this a bad sign?

kicker1, my S called USNA with a question a week ago and also asked about Scholastically/Academically qualified letters. He was told that they had not sent any out as they were "rewording" the letter. He and I are traveling up for CVW this coming weekend as well. I intend to ask that question again at the Admission Briefing on Friday.

Where are you coming from? Will you have a parent along?

Chicago area--parent is coming--this is my third visit....

It is not a bad sign. Only six of my 75 candidates in my area have been qualified academically by the Admissions Board. It should pick up soon.

kicker1, it is my son's third visit as well. We are coming from Texas. I will be asking the question about the Scholastically/Academically qualified letter at a Friday Admissions Briefing. Have a great time!

It would be great if you could let us know the answer of this!

Also, do you have to have the CFA completed (the last part of my application, to be completed this weekend) to be reviewed by the board? Or is it all reviewed piece by piece? In other words, do I need my CFA to be complete before the board will consider my scholastic/academic qualification?

Thanks!

i figured.. what is it that makes them better? anything specific?

Demonstrated leadership.
Higher SAT scores.
Top class rankings.
More rigorous course transcript.
Sports team captains.
Better physical fitness scores.
Character.

Yes. Last week I had everything completed except the CFA and I received an email from USNA saying that I needed to submit my CFA results before I could be reviewed.

For those of you worried about being Scholastically Qualified or not at this point in the process should remember that if you get tha qualification, then you are automatically shut out of the NAPS and Foundation considerations as those programs are generally for those that USNA feels meets the other criteria but need a little extra boost in the academic side. Also, if I am not mistaken, a large number of those that get appointments never to the Scholastically Qualified letter. Getting that letter is not manditory to getting the appointment letter.
