I am Junior in high school and I go to an extremely competitive school. My school only accepts 63 applicants a year out of the near 300 that apply. We will all graduate with an Associated Degree and our high school diploma. Due to the academic rigor of my school, we do not offer sports. I have been playing softball for three years. My first year I was a catcher and the past two years I have been co-captain for a county team. Since I am too old to play again this year for the rec ball team I am going to be assistant coaching because I am not old enough to have my own team. What will West Point do since I do not have sports offerings at school.

I have taken all honors courses along with all of my college classes (not AP. My school is located on the college campus) I am taking Russian II this semester as my language and I have made generally all A's and B's. I have been volunteering on an ambulance since I was 13 years old and I am captain of my post. I regularly volunteer for the Childrens Charities and I am a student ambassador every year for my school along with being a Camp Counselor at the week long camp my school opens up to upcoming freshman.

Are there any suggestions on what else I should do to better my chances of being accepted into West Point?

Thanks

You haven't mentioned SAT/ACT scores. As a junior I assume you're prepping for them. Continue to do so. Plan on taking them each at least once and then plan on taking the one you prefer a few times further to improve your scores.

Explain the sports situation to them just as you have done here. The softball co-captaincy is a good thing and I think the assistant coach role, because you've aged out, would be viewed positively as a leadership position as well.

Practice the CFA and be prepared to knock it out of the park.

You didn't mention GPA but make sure you're doing all you can to get the very best grades possible.

Start your application this spring. Try to go to Boy's or Girls State this summer (you didn't mention your gender but I think you'll know how to decide which to attend).

If your GPA is high enough and you knock the CFA out of the park I think you'll be viewed as a good candidate. But then I don't sit on the Admissions Boards.

I'm sure others will have further suggestions.

Boy/Girl State

I am a girl and I have emailed the women in charge of my area but I did that a couple of weeks ago and I never received a response. My GPA is good but I do not know it for sure atm. I will be getting my transcripts tomorrow. This semester I made a 100 in Russian I, 98 in college World Civilizations, 98 in college Argumentative Writing 112, 97 in Honors Earth and Environmental Science, and a 96 in college Pre-Calculus Algebra with Limits. I have made generally those same grades except I've had mid to high B's also. I did good on both the PLAN and the PSAT. On the PLAN I scored better than 92% of Juniors on the science and my others were pretty great too. However, I don't remember my PSAT scores for sure but I don't think they were that great. I'll be getting all of my scores tomorrow also.

Do you have any recommendations on how to prepare for the CFA?

Two things.
1. Practice the CFA as it will be given
2. Cross train.
For example, my DS is a Marine Option midshipman. Part of their PFT test (different from yours) is doing pullups, untimed. A max score is 20. SO he did a bunch of pullups. But he also worked his core, lifted weights, a most especially did a lot of rock climbing at an indoor wall. He would jog the 2.5 miles each way to the rock climbing club and spend an hour or so climbing. It really helped his back and shoulder muscles for the pullups. So do the CFA but find some other ways to train those same muscles as well. Sort of a muscle confusion thing.

Your grades sound excellent. Keep up the good work. Hopefully your standardized test scores are similar but if they are not, don't worry. These are difficult tests and people generally improve on their later attempts.

Good luck! :thumb:

It's been about 5 years since I posted on here... general update since you were so helpful. I ended up getting my nomination and an acceptance to West Point however, due to family medical issues, I had to turn down my acceptance. I ended up going to a state university and enlisted after graduation. Just received my CG's Hip Pocket scholarship to head to grad school.

I appreciate you answering all of my questions back then, it definitely helped.
