What are my chances?

I am applying for the four year AROTC scholarship. Below are my credentials and I was wondering if I could receive some feedback in regards to my chances of receiving a scholarship.

SAT- 1190
GPA- 3.8
All honors or AP courses
Captain of volleyball team (3 varsity letters)
2 years varsity soccer
In 2 academic clubs (FBLA and DECA)
National honors society member
Fitness test- 42 pushups, 51 situps

And does anyone know when you will find out whether or not you received a scholarship after the january board?

The problem is you didn't say what colleges you are applying to. Hard to give you chances. If you said to me MIT, I would say chances are not good. Now if you said college of Timbucktoo than my answer would be different.

I applied to: university of Delaware, penn state, Syracuse, Boston university and I have applied to 3 schools I would consider "reach" schools and they are university of Miami, UNC at chapel hill, and university of Maryland. I already got accepted into penn state.

Are any of these schools an "In State" school for you?

What is your IS school? UDel, UMDCP, UMiami, Penn?

I would say UNCCH is a reach even for admittance unless you have a really good hook, and being an IS will still make it a reach. UNCCH has always been classified as a Public Ivy, it is ranked as 1 of the top 5 colleges in the nation. Your SAT is low for UNCCH, even from an IS you would want to have been hitting the 1350 marker to feel safe.

UMDCP, is probably a reach too if you are an OOS. They only accept 25-30% from OOS, and they try to spread that number across the nation. For a long while UMDCP was basically known as the OOS IS college for NJ and NY kids. They are trying to get rid of that image.

Additionally the last I knew, UMDCP AROTC is recognized as one of their best large size dets. I only know that because DS just commissioned AFROTC out of UMDCP in 2012. If that is the case, than I would think they will have a lot of IS AROTC scholarship applicants with higher stats.

UMiami is probably a better shot from being a reach than the other 2.

Penn state is my instate school. And my sister goes to UNC and I have a connection with the director of admissions however it is by no means a guarantee.

I would hope that connection to the director is your hook, but even so from a scholarship perspective I think that your SAT is your achilles heel. It is low for UNCCH as an IS applicant, I would assume, haven't looked lately, but their avg SAT admittance is probably @1300, and since the system tends to give more scholarships to IS than OOS, because OOS = private from a cost perspective, it would be harder to get for UNCCH.

PA for UMDCP is also like NJ/NY many PA residents apply to UMDCP. Additionally UMDCP is their flagship school, and because that AROTC program is renown in the area, it is competitive for a scholarship. Again, the thing is UMDCP is going to be classified OOS for you. UMDCP is not cheap for OOS, and they do not allow ROTC cadets, even on scholarship IS rates like some other colleges you will not get a break on the costs. I know for UMDCP avg admittance SAT is also over the 1200 marker for IS, and closer to 1300 for OOS because they do use superscoring.

UDel, maybe your only OOS option. I don't know how big their det is, and what the acceptance rate for the school itself is, which can play into the equation.

I say that because certain state colleges will never be seen by IS students as a safety. UVA, UNCCH, UMDCP quickly come to mind. UVA and UNCCH for IS residents are always seen as reach schools. If that is how the kids see it, and they know they have to place IS on their list they are most likely going to through that into the pot along with whatever they consider as their safety for IS. (VT, VCCU, JMU for VA; NCST, ECU for NC, UMBC for MD).

I am not trying to be negative, you should always apply for everything you want, but understand how your list selection can impact your chances. Quick question did you get PSU college station?

You need to consider what your chances are at admission to these schools in combination with your chances of receiving a ROTC Scholarship to these schools. Another thing to consider is whether or not these schools offer free room and board to ROTC Scholarship winners. It is very possible that the in state public school could work out to be the more expensive option when you factor in room and board.

Looking at your stats, your best chance at the ROTC Scholarship would appear to be at an in state public school. Your chances are improved if you list an in state public school first.

I agree with Marist. If you look on the sticky at the top of this forum you can find out the schools that posters know of offering this option.

The only 2 I saw from his list would be:
University of delaware
starting the sophomore year, cadets can apply for additional funds to offset tuition above what the scholarship pays. Award is based on gpa. The university provide a sum of $62,500 annually for this purpose. The university provides a sum of $12,500 annually from which cadets can apply for special interest housing in their leadership community. Cadets who qualify for the honors program, depending on their gpa, may receive free housing through the honors program. The university also provides a general scholarship fund to which cadets can apply for additional monetary aid. Award is based upon gpa.

As you can see neither of the two offer 100% guarantee that as a ROTC cadet you will get assistance.

I know UMDCP does not. I can guarantee it. There are no ROTC only dorms. Not only that, but it does not guarantee housing at all after freshman yr. It is a lottery system. Off campus housing is very expensive...expect to pay around 7K a yr in rent.

I did not see UMiami on the list, but I would say that for our DS he received a huge merit packet back in 08. 100K. The ROTC scholarship was not as big of a factor from a cost issue for us as parents.
