Quick question. When the application says 3500 characters max, does that include spaces? And I am a little confused when it says characters, because I seem to want to think characters translates to words. Thanks!

I don't know what program you're using (Word, OpenOffice, etc)...but chances are if you go under "word count" it'll count both numbers and characters. They are different.

I typed up 2500 word essay. The entire way through it, it bothered me that they would be interested in reading through all 7 pages (double spaced) of it (and it bothered me even more that I managed to fill up 2500 words about overcoming a challenging experience in life that shaped me the way I am today ), then I read your post and looked up an online "character count"

I had over 11,000 characters, so I'm working on downsizing.

I am feeling your pain! I got to 1500 words though and realized the word count isn't the same as a character count, oh well

At least we have the information there within the paragraphs rather than not having any at all.

Sigh... at least I'm almost done. down to 3,600 characters!

hey guys im also going through the same thing right now. Do any of you guys wanna do a quick exchange and peer edit each others paper? It's just an idea that I had and it couldn't hurt.

Thoughts?

Good luck to all submitting

Summer Seminar

Does anyone know the percentage of applicants that will be accepted to the USAFA Summer Seminar? And ... does this help chances of an appointment?

i dont know the %, but this does not affect your status as an appointee. I know that for sure. It can't help to go though and get a good experience out of it, and also meet somee pretty cool people!

There is one less session this year than in past years. So, there will only be two. I don't know how many total slots they will have. Price has also changed from $350 to $300 this year. They are also announcing all selections in February, where previously it was a rolling admission. It is mainly a recruiting tool for the Academy. It does not affect your ability to get an appointment one way or the other. It might help you decide if USAFA is the right place for you or not. Though, do realize, it is only vaguely like cadet life.

Hey everyone, I have a question about the Summer Seminar App and the Academy app in General.

I speak fluent German. On the summer seminar app there isn't a place to put my language ability. I am curious if there is a place on the normal application to put this information, or if I should try to squeeze it into my personal statement on my summer seminar app.

Thanks

I have the same question, I speak fluent Spanish, and I think that would come as a good advantage.

Also, is the character limit with or without spaces? Thanks!

Here's and about article addressing character counts.

IMHO I would include spaces rather than risking going over the character limit.

@ Ameisen & Warrior...

I seem to recall from last year's app that there was an "anything else?" section at the end. I put down a few knick knacks, which included my language ability. (Taking Arabic, though it's nowhere near fluency.)

The application may have changed since last year. However, I'd look out for a section like that.

Also, the character count includes spaces, as I remember. It MAY give you an error if you try to save with too many characters, but don't bank on that.
