Who notifies if NOT appointed?

Greetings from Amman, Jordan, forum folks. I hope someone might still be awake in the US :)

Our DS has received nominations from both a senator and congressman in Illinois, in spite of a GPA/SAT lower than norm, we knew it would be a miracle if he was appointed. Yet with each step of qualification, our hopes increased.

When calling our other Illinois senator to check and see his status (just in case he would get three as some of you all have) the rep at the senator's office said: "The academy notified us you have been disqualified for grades".

Is this normally how a cadet hopeful discovers he is out of the running? Thanks for any clarification.

Typically a candidate learns about being DQ'd via a letter from USAFA admissions. I have never heard of hearing about through the grapevine like that. I would suggest your son contact his admission counselor at USAFA on Monday during regular business hours. They would be your best bet on confirming or refuting what the senator's aide said. It sounds as though your son (with 2 nominations) will be successful wherever he matriculates. Best wishes. :thumb:

Thank you so much, Dad

We were hoping for a reply like this to tide us over until we can contact his adviser Monday. Long-shot dreams are a tricky balance of pragmatism, perseverance and faith. Thanks also for your encouragement. The goal of the academy came late as a sophomore for him, we are proud of him for pulling off an astounding turnaround that will benefit him where ever he ends up.

If the academy is your goal and you don't see yourself anywhere else in AFROTC, consider taking the steps to prepare yourself to reapply next year. There is a large portion of each incoming class that is not coming straight out of high school. Take core courses at a uni and make a high GPA and retake the SAT and ACT as many times as possible. My SAT score went up more than 200 points since last year. My scores went from being just sub-par to way over the 75th percentile of the average incoming class (given by the 25% - 75% average scores they publish). So don't give up hope and seriously consider AFROTC.

...That being said, you don't know that you're DQ'd yet. Things can change really fast in admissions so don't assume anything.

Last year I heard that I didn't make it in from a TWE (Thin White Envelope) that showed up at my house in May, however, I was offered a scholarship in June.
The point is don't ever assume anything. :thumb:

If the academy is the only place you see yourself, keep in mind:

persistence: Firm or obstinate continuance in a course of action despite difficulty or opposition (Thank you Northwestern Prep School)

Thanks Matthewmillr94!

That's helpful to know. I do see myself at the Academy, but also in AFROTC. I've applied for a scholarship, didn't get it at the first board, but they're going to review it at the next board (February I believe). I've been accepted to two colleges, and one I was accepted into the DGS (Division of General Studies). I am planning on reapplying to the AFA next year, so I'll try and take as many core classes as I can.

And thanks for the encouragement, it helps me keep my head up!

I would just reiterate what others have said. My son was also a Falcon Scholar. He found out later that his ALO interview was what helped him receive the scholarship. He is currently class of 2014 and happy to live out his dream. The extra year was a blessing, and it confirmed for him that USAFA was the right choice. He attended MMI and some of his closest friends at the academy are from his prep year. Bottom line keep working hard!
Best of luck!

He's still in the running :)

My DS spoke with his admissions counselor this evening and confirmed he is still a qualified candidate (he has an added asset of being a fluent Arabic speaker).

It was encouraging to learn that the USAFA prep school and Falcon Foundation scholarships might be viable options to achieve his goal of an Academy appointment. From what we read, it would be a blessing indeed.

Jackson1989, I have a friend whose son is also Class of 2014 and went to MMI, she told me about the Falcon Foundation concurrently with this thread. I imagine they know each other :)

I am sure they are friends. The Falcon Scholars have a dinner at the academy and my son says it is a blast! Best of luck and glad to hear your son is still in the running!

Know you know why this process is referred to as a roller coaster ride. Glad to hear the good news.

Good reminder

Dad, yes indeed, a roller coaster with a regular, thrilling, learning curves.

Jackson, it is a small world!
