For USMA and ROTC scholarships, a question that always pops up is if you have a Varsity Letter.

I was wondering if it is limited to only Varsity sports? I know that letters are handed to other extracurriculars. Such as NHS, JROTC, Band, etc.

Thanks!

For ROTC, if they ask for varsity letters it usually has to do with the "Athlete" section of Scholar-Athlete-Leader paradigm. Those other activities can be listed in different sections of the application.

They are asking about varsity letters in the context of activities which are sports. Band is not a sport to any of the academies, but an extracurricular.

What if you're on a varsity team but you don't get a varsity letter for the sport? My district combines two schools for our crew team, so I don't get a varsity letter, even though I compete at the same level as other schools with varsity-lettered crew. It's a weird question of definitions, but I think it should be valued the same. Does anyone know?

For the AROTC Application make note/explanation of this in the Additional Remarks section of the application.

Ya High School Sports are weird like that. This year I played for and was a member of the Varsity Football Team but did not reciever a letter, but I received a letter on the Fencing Team while I fenced only rarely. I think as long as you participate in sports at the "Varsity Level" it should not make I difference but I may be wrong.

What exactly does the wording on the application question say? "Varsity sports" is generally what they are asking about. The exact formula for getting a varsity LETTER tends to vary widely between schools.

I just checked my d's portal, and in one column, it lists years participated and in another column, "lettered" and in the last column, " captain" - presumably, some credit for participating (at either jv or v level), some for letters, and some for being selected as a captain. The profile for the class of 2016 on the usma.edu website has three categories: Varsity Athlete (1079), Letter Winner (1043), and Team Captain (769).

Based on this, a few were Varsity team members who did not obtain varsity letters, so it's possible to get in w/o a letter. Hope this helps.

Despite a very nice note from my coach explaining the situation in my district and how much effort and hours per week are invested by my non-lettered team, my portal was only updated to reflect me starting my 3rd year with this season, nothing more. So maybe they have me down as a Varsity athlete somewhere, but I have no idea XD oh, well.
