The full list of CULP assignments was released tonight. If your cadet applied, they can log on to the portal and find out if they were selected and where/when they're going. As I understand, there were approx. 2400 applicants for 1300 slots.
DS will be going to Bulgaria, as of right now. Last year his orders changed in February from Malaysia to the Marshall Islands. They can change all the way up to the departure date, so don't run out and purchase Rosetta Stone just yet.
 
My son just went on his portal and the application still looks the same. Does that mean he was not chosen?
 
The selection process is complete. 1350 cadets were chosen from over 2400 applicants. USACC is sending 123 teams to 42 different countries.

If you were not selected, your only chance is to fill in for a Cadet at your BN that has to drop out for some reason.

Additional international travel options include Project Go or CTLT.

Congratulations to your son. Slovakia looks like an amazing CULP opportunity. Wait a bit before buying that Slovaia/English Dictionary though. Last year my son was assigned Slovakia, stayed that way for a few weeks, when he received the official orders, they were for Bosnia, I guess the entire Slovakia mission was scrapped last year. I hope it sticks this time, we did some research on a previous CULP trip and it sounded like a wonderful experience. I don't believe they are going to Bosnia this year, it doesn't surprise me. give me a PM and I can give you some of the details if you like.
 
Disappointed son

Son found out today he was not selected for CULP, four others from his smallish college were - two his year, two others, not.
As I understand from here, he has no hope of going, save filling in for one of the four from his school, correct?
With a 3.6 GPA, it's hard to understand the line of distinction?

What year is your son?

Have him tell his cadre that he is still interested in going and if they can keep an eye out for an open slot, not sure if they have access to that information but it's worth a try.

agp312, Sorry to hear that your son was not selected this year. What year is he? The info below explains some of the process/selection.

Once a Cadet completes the on-line application, CULP Division requests
approval for attendance from his or her Professor of Military Science (PMS). After the close of the
application period, CULP Division sends Brigade Commanders an Order of Merit List (OML) for all
recommended Cadets. CULP Division bases the OML on the Cadet’s GPA, ROTC GPA, language skills, and
other considerations. After receiving the OML, Brigade Commanders select attendees from their
Battalions in accordance with their Cadet Professional Development priorities. They make their final
decision by matching each Cadet’s skills against the language and skill requirements for the quota.
Traditionally, the selection rate is between 40 and 70 percent (455 selected from 1218 applicants FY111;
1194 selected from 1600 applicants in FY12).

If he is a MSI, MSII, or MSIII he can be considered for any slot in his BDE that becomes available if he meets the criteria for that particular mission. First choice will usually be given to the battalion that the slot belonged to.

If he is a LDAC bound MSIII he can be recommended for additional follow on training after LDAC. This usually means Air Assault, CTLT, or DCLT, but could include one of the CULP missions that only requires the Blue passport.

Each CULP program is unique. Some are open to Cadets that have no foreign language ability. Some require advanced language skills. Some require a variety of characteristics. For example one of my Cadets was selected for a Mil to Mil mission in Spain that required advanced Spanish, 270 + APFT, with preference for Airborne qualified. The Cadet spent 2 hard weeks in the Pyrenees with Spanish Special Forces and earned his Spanish jump wings. His GPA was not really a consideration. Another Cadet was accepted to a CULP mission with no language or PT requirements. His GPA was the only consideration.

Just like when applying for the ROTC Scholarship, the options selected are as important as the characteristics of the selector.
 
Thank you for you comprehensive response! Son has excellent record, is starting his second semester Sophomore year, but does not yet have a college language under his belt. Perhaps this was to his detriment? DS will certainly recover from this disappointment far sooner than his parents...
 
If he has done well on his APFTs, there is the possibility of other summer training, such as Airborne and Air Assault. If he is interested, he should let his cadre know.

(you never mentioned it, but I assume he is contracted)
 
Yes, he is contracted -
I shared this information with him. Not sure it made him feel better, but hope it spurs him to explore other areas of training for this summer. Airborne and Air Assault are certainly great options.
