Conditional Offer of Appointment (for Waiver)

My entire application is complete, I have been informed that I passed my CFA, and I have two nominations. However, I have a medical issue that has been causing me problems since I began this process. I will need a waiver from USNA to be offered an appointment. I have attempted to receive a waiver twice and was denied both times. I am confident that my third, and final, attempt at getting this waiver will be successful. However, whether or not I actually get the waiver has nothing to do with my question.

According to usna.edu, "If you have a disqualifying condition, you will be automatically considered for a waiver if/when you receive a Conditional Offer of Appointment." I have already been considered for a waiver twice and have even been forwarded some basic USNA doctor notes when they reviewed my condition for a waiver. Since I have been considered, does this mean that I have been granted a Conditional Offer of Appointment and will get accepted as soon as I get a waiver? I emailed the medical specialist at USNA and was told that my application has already been reviewed by the Admissions Board and that their recommendation is posted in my file. Am I in if I do eventually get a waiver?

I am in the same boat you are in. I have two noms and have been found physically and scholastically qualified, but am waiting on a Conditional offer of appointment. I have been told by the forum and by the admissions office that a conditional offer of an appointment means if I receive a medical waiver, I will be given an appointment. Unfortunately, no once can tell me a timeframe on when I could receive a conditional offer of appointment except that most appointments come in mid-march so most likely around then. I understand that you receive a letter explaining that you have received a conditional appointment. I am interested on how you got the a review for a waiver already without a conditional offer of appointment. I would love to get that opportunity! Also, what medical specialist did you talk to?

I don't think that you can make that assumption unless you received a "Principal" nomination and/or a LOA (Letter of Assurance) from USNA.

My reasoning behind not receiving a letter stating I got a Conditional Offer--if I did actually get one--is that they probably would grant me a Conditional Offer on the same day that they review me for a waiver. There would be no point in sending me a letter and then turning right back around and sending me a different letter stating that my waiver was denied. I have been emailing Donna Weber, and she has been extremely helpful. I am assuming that since admissions has reviewed my file and didn't deny me right away that they are at least considering me competitive. I'm just trying to figure out if usna.edu is 100% accurate in saying that only candidates with Conditional Offers get reviewed for waivers.

Go back and read it again. If your quote of USNA.edu is accurate, it says that those with conditional offers will be reviewed, it does not say that those who are reviewed have conditional offers. I did hear somewhere that unless you had a nomination they would not consider you for a waiver. In other words, they don't waste the time on non-qualified candidates. In the case of my DS, we were sent a conditional LOA at about the same time that the review for a waiver started. The LOA was conditional on receiving medical qualification.

Just curious Grad/Dad the Conditional Offer of Appointment is just a letter and you only get the BFE after you receive the medical waiver?

The LOA is just a letter not the BFE. Ours stated that we were guaranteed an offer of appointment if..... Medically Qualified. There was also a section about having received a nomination, which in our case was not applicable. I was led to believe that they stopped sending them out sometime in January because they were focusing on the BFE's. If you have not received by now chances are you won't before receiving the BFE.

There is quite a bit of misinformation in these posts.

(1) A Letter of Assurance is a TYPE of conditional offer of appointment. Conditional offers of appointments CAN STILL go out from the beginning of the cycle until late in the cycle (they don't stop just because nominations are in). A LOA does not go through the normal admissions board process, therefore, a candidate who did not receive an LOA and was found to be qualified by the Admissions Board COULD receive a conditional offer. A conditional offer of appointment is normally (more often than not) for someone who is medically disqualified. However, there is a difference between LOA/Conditional Offer of Appointment.

(2) For the most part (i.e. 99% of the time), a candidate's medical waiver process WILL NOT COMMENCE until a conditional offer of appointment is made. USNA will notify you when the medical waiver process begins. So unless, you have been SPECIFICALLY CONTACTED or NOTIFIED, the medical waiver process HAS NOT STARTED. The medical waiver process isn't something that happens overnight, it definitely would take a few days (fastest) to weeks (it, ultimately, needs the Superintendent's approval).

Do you mean the "waiver granted/denied" decision takes days to weeks or the decision to apply (wrong word, I know) for a waiver takes days to weeks?

Would one be notified if a Conditional Offer of Appointment is made, or should one just assume that if the waiver process has started that one has most likely been made? For example, I have been reviewed for a waiver twice and have not received any notification about a Conditional Offer.

You don't apply for a waiver. USNA will get in contact with you and walk you through the process when this happens. Odds are, if you haven't been contacted, the waiver process hasn't started, though for things like visual acuity and other conditions that might not need amplifying information, it might begin without your knowledge. The entire process from when amplifying information is requested to a final decision by the Superintendent could take up to weeks.

USNA use to be more lenient on who went through the waiver process. I believe about two admission cycles ago, the belt was tightened in order to be more efficient and lessen the work load for the medical staff for waivers. #1dbnugfan, I am not sure about your specific case.

Waivers can be granted without a conditional offer of appointment or LOA.

USNA waived my DS, (rather quickly) even though he did not have a nom (before slates were turned in) and he will not have a nom as our district and senators make you choose 1 academy to seek noms for and he chose USMA.

(as he has not been waived by USMA yet, though he does have an LOE and a nom, he is beginning to have second thoughts about his strategy):frown:

Each decision is unique and depends on the circumstances and what the waiver is for. Some needs documentation and some don't. However, for those decisions that require more complicated paperwork, documentation, and involve more risk to the Navy/government, the waiver may not be as "automatic" as acadadad is describing.

I post what is relayed to me through Admissions about the waiver process. I will caveat, as I did above, NOT ALL medical situations are equal.

If you don't mind sharing, what did you son need a waiver for?

He answered truthfully a question regarding bleeding problems. When he was 4 he has some significant bloody noses. He underwent some vigilant testing (both mom and I are in medical field which caused some level of overreaction in our first baby boy:redface:) which found slighly low levels of a clotting factor in the initial tests. Two subsequent tests were above normal but the Dr. at the time thought it bore watching - as he was still having bloody noses. He has always reported it on med forms in case he was ever in a situation where that info might come into play. Fast forward 13 years of very active life and he has never had any problems or required any treatment etc. As part of remedial info prior to DQ we sent all records from way back when and a letter from his doc for the last 10 years saying there were no issues.

I thought at the time that they must have some sort of triage system where there are sitations that require different levels of follow-up and review but I agree with BG - from everything I could find it seems like literally every case is different

Sorry I am not trying to hijack this thread BUT I recently checked my status with the DoD people and they told me that I have received a waiver for what was disqualifying me before. Does that mean that I am good to go?

Haha I am a re-applicant so I am just hoping that the waiting is finally almost over!

Thanks in advance for any responses.

I am not sure if your waiver means that you will be appointed, but it is definitely a relief for sure. I actually received a letter from USNA stating that I have been granted a waiver for my condition. They didn't ask me for any information about it, but I did send in a letter from my physician explaining my condition on the advice of my BGO. A few weeks pass, and I have a waiver.

Not sure if I'm getting an appointment or not, but also as a re-applicant, I hope to find out soon!

DD was medically DQed in Sept. Then was granted a USNA waiver in October. Invited to canidates weekend and attended in October. Have MOC nom in mid Dec. Keeps updating file. Have heard nothing. Portal shows nom. Where do you think DS stands? Thank you
