My daughter is getting her LDAC date request put in this week with her BN and the subject of CTLT came up. Clearly, you want to select a date that leaves enough time afterwards so that you can make it to school afterwards, but beyond I have a couple of questions that maybe Clarkson or Marist can answer:

1) Are LDAC and corresponding CTLT dates assigned together for a BN? i.e. X BN has 1 in Regiment 1, 1 in Regiment 3, 2 in Regiment 7, and the ones in Regiment 1 and 7 have CTLT assignments with them but the Regiment 3 does not?

2) I've read posts that are all over the map as to how many CTLT slots a BN gets. Obviously OML will determine who gets offered the slots available at the BN, but what percentage of LDAC attendees typically get a CTLT slot?

3) I've also heard stories about CTLT slots being handed out at LDAC. Any idea of how many or is it a function of how many give theirs up (voluntarily or involuntarily) while at LDAC? What week in LDAC would those slots become available?

Kind of selfish motives here... I've thought about picking her up from LDAC and doing a road trip out west afterwards (see some relatives and some sights). Clearly if CTLT is available to her, she (and I) would prefer that.

Obviously I'm not going to book anything for a while and probably not until she is out there. And it sounds like I want to book a refundable ticket as well, if I do buy one.

Any advice here?

I can just relay how it worked for my son when he went to LDAC and CTLT.

Son was given his CTLT orders just after he received his LDAC dates. I have heard that they sometimes offer CTLT as well as Air Assult or Airborne slots at LDAC, not sure when they do this or how often.

Some CTLT slots require previous training, the slot my son received required that he have already completed Airborne, his slot was with the 82nd Airborne at Ft. Bragg.

My son's CTLT was scheduled right after LDAC, we live in the Seattle area so we were able to pick him up after graduation, he spent the rest of the day and night at home and was back on a plane the next afternoon. After CTLT was done he flew directly back to school which started 2 days after he got back.

My son's battalion had a few slots, I think about 5 went to CTLT. Some elected not to go because of conflicts over the summer. A couple of the cadets did their CTLT at the Army BCT. the OML did come into play for the CTLT selections, my son was #1 on the list but was only offered the one slot because he was the only cadet that had been to Airborne.

I know that some slots came available just before school let out, the cadre kept looking for more slots right up to the end of school. This did make it a bit challenging for some that were trying to make plans over the summer. I know of one cadet whose family scheduled a trip to Hawaii after hearing the LDAC dates only to have a CTLT slot open up late that conflicted with the trip, the cadet went to CTLT.

Best of luck to Goaliegirl in getting a slot that works, a nice road trip would be nice.

Hi again Goaliedad,

My daughter has applied for a CTLT AMEDD medical internship. She expects to hear about that and her dates for LDAC in March. She is under the impression that CC sync's the LDAC and internship dates. However, we have no idea if her internship request will be accepted, when it will be, or where it will be. As Jcleppe noted, they seem to try to schedule them right after LDAC.

Like Jcleppe, we're in Seattle so hoping for a few days before or after LDAC to spend with my daugher. If you do end up out this way we should all connect!

Selecting an early or late LDAC RGT will improve your chances of getting CTLT, DCLT, or any other follow on school.

If I remember correctly, our BN received 2 dedicated CTLT slots that had no special requirements (Did not require ABN or TS Clearance). There were also several slots requiring special requirements that we could submit our Cadets for. Those slots were decided by a BDE OML. There is also a small group of cadre that attend LDAC as the CPDT LNO team. There job is to fill all of the slots that Cadet Command has been given. If a Cadet backs out of a slot 3 days before your DS graduates LDAC, the CPDT LNO will ask the RGT CDR of the RGT that graduates closest to the start date if they have anyone that wants the slot. If necessary, they can approve early departure from LDAC.

You can receive additional training slots by being selected by your BN CDR, selected by BDE, or by being in the right place at the right time.

Aside from the practical benefits of participating in CTLT (Cadet Troop Leader Training), does it have a unique and measurable impact on the OMS (Order of Merit Score)?

Or is it just another among various factors and activities (e.g., CULP, AA) which come into play in the PMS's Experience Based Observations component of the OMS?

I would guess the answer to the following question depends on an individual's particular talents and inclinations (as well as the CTLT assignment), but I'll ask it anyway: For a cadet intent on Infantry, would CTLT or Air Assault be a better activity?

In my opinion, CTLT is the best training event for those that are trying to confirm or rule out a particular branch.

As others have said, if you get CTLT you are usually slotted for an early or late reg. When I went in 2011 I was selected for CTLT and ended up getting slotted with 2nd REG. In my battalion, unless you had summer school or Army training, you had no say regarding your LDAC regiment. We had a lot of slots for my batt in 2011 but I doubt they are as plentiful now.

I am from Seattle as well and got to spend exactly 3 hours at home before I got on a plane to FT. Carson. Don't plan on being able to stick around. In addition if no one is there to pick you up at graduation, you get stuck in a hold over company up until a van takes you to the airport.

Throughout the course of LDAC (as Marist said) they will hold "follow on training" meetings where people will sometimes back out of their slots or new ones become available. When I went there was always a glutton of people trying to get a slot and very few willing to give theirs up (but it happens...). Literally there was 1 slot for 15 people vying for a shot. The OCONUS slots such as Germany or Korea were considered as valuable as gold.

I was a nursing major but opted for CTLT instead (It's possible). I do nursing stuff all year around and wanted to try something with a more well-rounded Army experience. In turn I was eventually placed in a armored cav (Armor branch) unit at Ft.Carson. If I had to rate my experience out of 10 I would probably give it a 6.5. The unit I was with was refitting/resting from deployment and we literally did no training while I was there except PT and training meetings. I appreciate being put into the role of creating battle-brief updates/training meeting coordinator, but was woefully disappointed with PT and the general morale (All the NCOs kept telling for me not to view the whole of the Army off my experience at this particular unit). The biggest piece of experience I came away with at CTLT was the daily routine of the Army, personalities represented and role of a PL (biggest one obviously).

Lots of people have 10/10 experiences. It all depends on the unit, it's training cycle and the PL you are with. On the off days many of the cadets got to hang out with PLs and head into Colorado Springs for some fun. My PL was married and literally did not want to have contact or do anything on the weekends. In one instance he took 10 minutes after work to drop me off at the DFAC and later told me he got reamed by his wife for being 10 minutes late to dinner. After that he informed me that I would have to take the staff duty van for the rest of the training duration (awesome...). Like I said, maybe this guy was already beaten down by the age of 23, but a lot of the other PLs were awesome to be around.

There is also a BCT version called DCLT and no it CTLT doesn't play a huge part (0.25 or .5 points) of the OML from what I remember.

EDIT: I remember a few Air Assault slots and one Airborne slot being offered to our reg. However, the slots were opened up because the holders of the slots were not going to pass LDAC and follow on training is usually dependent on completion of LDAC. I would hate to go back to my PMS after failing LDAC and losing our battalion a school slot. On top of that the guys I saw lose these slots pissed hot for hard drugs or simply just quit.

Holy Crap GoalieGirl is going to LDAC already! They grow up so fast.

To answer your question...all of the above. If she gets a CTLT slot on campus they will match that with a reg at camp. If slots become available at camp, they will have been turned in by someone in that reg who is no longer eligible, and that slot will have been matched to the reg already. Have to be flexible if she wants a slot.

Yeah, I've been here almost 4 years now and it has gone by fast. GoalieGirl as I have referred to her is not a girl any more. ROTC has definitely had its part in that.

First of all thanks for giving guidance on how things happen, if that is the best way to describe it.

It sounds like the LDAC dates follow the CTLT selections - i.e. a BN gets a X branch CTLT slot and a Y branch CTLT slot and turn in their candidates to CC to get the corresponding LDAC date.

I believe she has been discussing her branch interests with her cadre, so hopefully if an appropriate (branch) CTLT date is available to her BN then she has a better chance of getting something of interest to her.

It all makes a bit more sense now. Matching up specialty CTLT slots at the BDE level makes a lot more sense with a limited number of qualified candidates being spread out.

Of the BN slots, what branches make up the majority of CTLT assignments? Or are they just generalist type of experiences? I saw a few references to using CTLT to explore or confirm interest in specific branches. Not that I would expect much of a choice - she is in a small BN and I wouldn't expect many BN slots to choose from.

I think it goes off of whatever was available to be honest. For my school we had 6 or 7 slots with most being infantry or armor (1 AG and another MI I think). But who know maybe another school had all chemical or trans, I think it all depends on what units are available to host and specific funds allocated to the BDE. In general I think the MSIII instructors try to match up interests with post/branch slots. I told him I was originally from Colorado (plus interested in seeing Ft Carson) and I got the slot. For some reason there wasn't a great deal of interest in CTLT in my class as the last 2 slots pretty much were "voluntold" to people. Everyone else was really interested in getting a airborne/air assault or nothing at all.

Anyone hear about CTLT for ths summer yet? My DD was told all the internships would be awarded by last Friday. Apparently they were...except for the medical category she is waiting on. Anyone else hear anything?

The only thing we have done within our campus (last week) was that we raised our hands indicating if we were interested in doing CTLT.

"Nothing at all." That's shameful. Your ROTC should be ashamed that that's an option, and that cadets would pass on an opportunity to work with soldiers. If I was the PMS, I'd be seriously re-evaluating some cadets' desire to be leaders.

I thought so too, which is why I turned down my nurse training so I could do something different. I was excited to do something on the combat arms side of the Army that didn't involve the medical field. I looked around the room and saw the lack of hands so I jumped at it. To be honest I learned more about the culture of the Army in 4 weeks than I did in 4 years of ROTC. Even if the training wasn't exactly exciting I did appreciate the opportunity.

He did re-evaluate, as some are at home today looking at repayment options. He is a tough old WP grad who doesn't tolerate people who refuse to strive for excellence.

That was a bit surprising to me as well. My son said there's always someone in the cadre's office asking what's available, there's never been a need for a show of hands. Most cadets are asking if they can have more then one slot, doesn't matter what it is. My son bugged the poor MSGT so much he found him a Winter Mountain Warfare slot, he's there now.

I agree with you on this one, if the cadre has to force someone to go, there's and issue in my mind.

Haha that's me (except now as a LT) bothering the S-3 SFC every week for a ABN/AAS or EFMB slot somewhere. I really want that EFMB (Medical version of the EIB), but apparently it's very hard to obtain with a rather low pass rate hovering around <20% sometimes. Oh well just have to train up and dig out some of those field medical manuals!

Just to kind of revive the thread, I did find out today I was selected for CTLT. I'll be leaving straight from LDAC to CTLT.

Anybody else?

Great, where are you going?

Best of luck at LDAC
