When you receive your letter state whether or not you received multiple schools or your school that was posted on your portal.
 
DS got letter today and got 3yr to 1st, 2nd , and 3rd choice. NROTC gave him a 4 yr to 2nd choice. Now hes not sure as he may choose NROTC. He got citadel, rutgers, and penn state for AROTC.

The scholarship is nice, but what he needs to think about is the commitment owed when they commission.

4 yrs AD in the Navy when they didn't get their 1st career field choice is not the same as going to a college for 4 yrs as their back up plan.

College is 30 weeks a yr for 4 yrs and they chose where they will go, their major. AD life is 52 weeks, 7 days a week for 4 yrs, and the military decides where you will go, their career field.

Is the 4 yr scholarship compared to 3 yr worth it?

His choices for schools did not way very heavy on him. He is grateful at any school, and happy at any. In regards to the career, he was born in portsmouth naval and he spent some nights on the USS JFK as I had watch. He knows the Army/Navy difference. Its really got to be his decision, you're 100% right. He has several plans. Navy has a few futures for him and the Army holds a few more as well. He's ultimately gonna have to figure that out. He is sitting down with his Blue and Gold officer as well as his Field Force Rep. All I can do is share my experiences with him. Hopefully, others can share theirs. Either way, he is a very sharp kid and he has planned routes for either services. Reading this forum has also helped him in figuring his path. I pray for him and his decisions.
 
DS letter arrived. 3 Year Scholarship, 1st and 3rd Choice. Fordham University and University of Delaware. Great news. Good Luck to all.
 
My letter just came in. 4-year scholarship to #1 choice, no other choices listed. Fine with me. :smile:

Looks so far to be a mix of 3 and 4yr scholarships being awarded. Will probably never know how CC is deciding which ones to award.

Congratulations to all the new receipients, 3 and 4 year.

May I ask why Fordham over DE? DS looking at same options but hasn't visited yet...
 
Received 3 year AD to Boston University, University of Delaware, and Syracuse. Not sure which one to choose and not sure how I'm going to pay for my freshman year. Any advice on which school is best?

Congratulations

Those are 3 fine schools. The best school is the one that you feel like you would be the most comfrotable, the school that you see your self succeeding at.

A couple arbitrary things to look at:

1. Are any of these schools the Host Battalion school.
2. Have you researched to see how the MS classes are handled at each school.
3. How are the MS Classes graded and do they count on your transcript or toward your major.
4. How many credits count from all your MS Classes.
5. If the school you want is not a host school, how far would you need to travel to get to the host school and how long will that take each day.
6. Which school will be inclined to give you the best financial package for your first year.

In the end you need to pick the school you really want based on how you see your self succeeding at that school.

DS just received his letter. 4 yr to his 4th choice school. Thrilled to get it, but now he needs to get in off the waiting list.
We are surprised because it is an OOS private and #2 and #3 were both public.

Actually NROTC comes with a 5 year AD commitment, except for Nuc, which I think is 6, and Aviation which is about 10. Army is 4, unless Aviation which is about 8 or 9.

Aside from the huge differences in actual life after commissioning, now is probably a good time to consider some other small differences while in the ROTC program:

Summer Training: NROTC has at least 4 weeks, paid, mandatory each summer. AROTC is only mandatory after junior year, at LDAC.
Orientation: NROTC has a pretty rigorous week long training prior to freshman year. AROTC has none.
Monthly Subsistence Stipend: AROTC is $300, $350, $450, $500. I think NROTCis I think is $250, $300, $350, $400.
Books grant: AROTCis $1,200 per year, NROTC is I think $800.

Congratulations on the scholarship awards. It's odd though that you didn't get a scholarship to your in-state school, but have instead two very expensive private schools among your choices. I suppose this means that Penn State may be extremely competitive even though it is a large unit.

You previously stated you already had been accepted at Penn State. I assume you would have mentioned it if you had gotten in at any of the other schools, so this makes your position a little tricky, especially since you don't know whether and how much aid any of them might offer. I don't remember when college notification occurs, but if it's on the same date in mid-March, then you'll have to make your ROTC decision in the absence of that information.

Have you visited the three schools and their AROTC units? You probably should contact the ROOs just to let them know you've received the scholarship but haven't been accepted to the school yet. Obviously, you can't tell each one that it is your first choice, but clearly you are interested. Also, you may want to explore with PSU whether there is a chance for a transfer. Is your heart set on Mount Nittany, or would other campuses like Altoona which also have ROTC be acceptable if it could boost your chance for a transfer?

All three are good schools by reputation. It might be a good idea to draw up a matrix with SU, BU and UDel in a row across the top and different categories in a column at the left (or right), such as climate, campus and local environment(urban/surburban/rural), first year tuition cost, whether or not there is a room and board contribution from the school, school size, battalion size, what the program looks like for your proposed major, etc., whether they have a top ranked basketball team (just kidding, though some people identify sports with school spirit). You can use this to compare the schools and what you like or dislike about them.

Remember that there is the possibility of transfer when the dust has settled. Perhaps someone else can comment on a strategy of accepting a scholarship to an expensive school with the goal of transferring it to a less costly one. Also, as others have discussed at length, you have to keep in mind the possibility that ROTC might not work out for you after you're in it, meaning that you would have to have a plan for paying for the more expensive school.

Just as a added note, the NROTC Marine Corps Option and Nursing Scholarship has a 4 year service obligation.

Army Aviation is a 6 year service obligation that starts after completion of Flight school which is not taking between 14 and 16 months. So the average obligation for Army Aviation will be between 7yrs 2 mo. and 7yrs 4 mo. unless for some reason flight school takes longer. This does not take into account any other factors that can extend a service obligation such as ADSO's.
 
DS received his letter today and his offer is for 3 year at first choice only (Michigan State). We are really excited because we didn't expect an offer because he is not intending on STEM Major (He was accepted into MSU's James Madison College as International Studies and language majors).
 
I understand that DS will need tuition and room/board paid for during his first year since he received a 3-year scholarship. However, will he receive the monthly stipend and book stipend for year 1 or just for the years on scholarship? Thanks for your information!
 
I just got the offer in the mail! Engineering, offered to my 3rd choice and full tuition! Congratulations to all! :biggrin:
